Higher Ed Bubble Driving Luxury Development Around College Campuses

The higher ed bubble ? the explosive growth in tuition and student loan debt driven by government policies promoting college ? has resulted in a lot of hiring and compensation growth in the higher ed industry.

And, in turn, that?s driving big-money development around college campuses to serve this growing class of rich university elite.

Real-estate investors and developers, hungry for new areas for growth, are finding a lucrative and previously untapped market in these areas surrounding college campuses, one marked by low inventory, booming enrollment and an increasing appetite for luxury living.

We see this national trend here in North Dakota, where salary for the state?s 11 university presidents has grown rapidly over the last decade (more than doubling for the heads of NDSU and UND). North Dakota?s new chancellor, Hamid Shirvani, got a $120,000 per year raise over his predecessor (he promptly bought a Porsche upon taking his new job).

At North Dakota?s largest university, the average full professor makes over $100,000/year, an amount that has grown $42,000 over the last decade.

How many of you are making $42,000/year more than you were a decade ago? Not many of you. But then, most of us don?t work in an industry in the middle of a bubble.

?When the borrowed money dries up, this?ll change,? writes Glenn Reynolds, author of The Higher Education Bubble.

Indeed it will. But in the mean team, let?s remember that this opulence is built on the back of unsustainable amounts of student loan debt, even as the value of a college degree declines.

INDIANAPOLIS ? U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar will continue wielding influence in Washington after he leaves office, albeit with a much younger audience.

Lugar is starting a Washington, D.C., internship program with the University of Indianapolis called the Richard G. Lugar Academy. He has also agreed to deliver a handful of lectures each year as a distinguished professor at the private university.

Lugar, 80, said Friday the academy will focus on many of the issues he's addressed in his 36-year Senate career, including weapons proliferation and global food shortages. He smiled broadly as he talked about mentoring students over the last four decades and said the new program should help more students gain experience in the nation's capital.

"It will not be mandatory that they have a semester there, or even a few weeks, but many will want to choose that. As a result we will try to introduce them to people in Washington D.C., as well as to problems that everyone there, as well the students, will try to solve," he said.

He punctuated just how close students could get to international issues by recalling his own experience during the 2001 anthrax attacks on the Capitol, which put the area on even higher alert shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

"We were rushed out to the Dirksen (Senate office) building, our throats swabbed and told to take Cipro tablets for 48 hours or we might die. And that was not melodramatic, the post office people that handled this died," he said. "This happened in our country, in my office."

The question of Lugar's post-Senate career has lingered since he was defeated in May after a grueling primary battle with the tea party-backed state treasurer Richard Mourdock. Lugar's name arose as a possible choice to replace the departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but aides quickly nixed that idea. He said Friday he was not contacted by the Obama administration about a Cabinet position.

Lugar has travelled the globe promoting non-proliferation since May and was most recently awarded the Defense Department's highest civilian award for his work with former Georgia Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn.

Lugar said he is looking at potential work with Indiana University and Georgetown University to expand the public service program, and is also in talks with the German Marshall Fund.

Lugar's announcement marked something of a homecoming for the elder statesman. University President Robert Manuel said in his remarks that it was former University of Indianapolis President Gene Sease who convinced then-Mayor Lugar to teach at the university while running for U.S. Senate in 1976.

"Professor Lugar taught political science that year, giving students a front-row seat to the electoral process," Manuel said.

Lugar later joked that the job was perfect: he taught in the morning and campaigned in the afternoon and evening.

Sony Online Entertainment publicly shames cheaters of Planetside 2

"Haruhi at http://artificialaiming.com was just banned. all 3 of his accounts. Goodbye you scumbag. Find a new hobby or get good at the game."

Ouch! This was posted publicly from John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. If that won't bring the red out in your cheeks, nothing will.

This was only part of a chain of posts by Smedley, though it may be the most cutting. He and SOE have been ruthlessly hunting down cheaters, hackers, and ne'er-do-well-ers on the game Planetside 2. They ban the players, and then periodically publicly shame them via social media sites such as Twitter. That's where Smedley has been posting these biting gems.

In truth, the players of the game itself have been complaining at length about the amount of cheaters in the game. SOE is only, in essence, responding to what the majority of their gaming audience wants - retribution.

?I want to make some very clear statements about hacking in PlanetSide 2.?We are aggressively banning people,? Smedley said. ?We play the game ? we see the people using aim bots. We are banning them. We see people attempting other stuff. We are banning them.?As they develop hacks, we will break the hacks. We have time and great people. Trust that this is a top priority. Hackers will not win.?

There was some negative response to the naming-of-names by John - he has this to say about that: ?People are asking why I publicly named Haruhi. Ordinarily our policy is not to do that. Since he?s pushing the Aimbot site?I thought an exception has to be made for the guy pimping the tools hackers are using. It?s not to shame him. It?s to make an example?and say ?the stuff this guy is selling or giving you will get you banned? just like him.?

Wow. What a warning. These are some pretty strong words from the president of such a big company. It seems there is a trend growing with large online games to outright ban people from playing - earlier this week we saw Riot Games ban a pro player from League of Legends, and now this. Better question - is this hot, or not?
