Passengers leave crippled cruise ship

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? A cruise ship disabled for five nightmarish days in the Gulf of Mexico finally docked with some 4,200 people aboard late Thursday, passengers raucously cheering the end to an ocean odyssey they say was marked by overflowing toilets, food shortages and foul odors. About four hours later, the last of the passengers had gotten off the ship.

"Sweet Home Alabama!" read one of the homemade signs passengers affixed alongside the 14-story ship as many celebrated at deck rails lining several levels of the stricken ship Triumph. The ship's horn loudly blasted several times as four tugboats pulled the crippled ship to shore. Some gave a thumbs-up sign and flashes from cameras and cellphones lit the night.

About an hour after the ship pulled up at 9:15 p.m. Central, a steady stream of passengers began making their way down the gang plank, some in wheelchairs and others pulling carry-on luggage. One man gave the thumbs up.

An ambulance pulled up to a gate at the bottom of the gang plank, began flashing its lights and then pulled away.

By around 1 a.m., Carnival tweeted, "All guests have now disembarked the Carnival Triumph."

Carnival had said it would take up to five hours for all the 3,000 passengers to be off.

Many boarded buses bound for New Orleans and Texas, while others settled into local hotels in Mobile to get a shower and a hot meal.

As they came ashore, passengers reflected on a cruise they'd rather forget.

For 24-year-old Brittany Ferguson of Texas, not knowing how long passengers had to endure their time aboard was the worst part.

"I'm feeling awesome just to see land and buildings," said Ferguson, who was in a white robe given to her aboard. "The scariest part was just not knowing when we'd get back"

As the ship pulled up, some aboard shouted, "Hello, Mobile!" Some danced in celebration on one of the balconies. "Happy V-Day" read one of the homemade signs made for the Valentine's Day arrival and another, more starkly: "The ship's afloat, so is the sewage."

A few dozen relatives on the top floor of the parking deck of the terminal were waving lights at the ship as it carefully made its way alongside. Those about were screaming, whistling and taking pictures.

Hundreds gawked from dockside at the arrival at the Alabama cruise terminal in Mobile, the state's only seaport, as the Triumph docked.

Taxis were lined up waiting for people, and motorists on Interstate 10 stopped to watch the exodus of passengers from the cruise ship.

Some still aboard chanted, "Let me off, let me off!"

It took six grueling hours navigating the 30-odd-mile ship channel to dock, guided by at least four towboats. Nearly 900 feet in length, it was the largest cruise ship ever to dock at Mobile.

In texts and flitting cellphone calls, the ship's passengers described miserable conditions while at sea, many anxious to walk on solid ground.

Buses started leaving the raucous terminal. Up to 100 have been reserved to carry passengers either on a seven-hour ride to the Texas cities of Galveston or Houston or a two-hour trip to New Orleans. Some also can stay in Mobile. From there, passengers will make their way home with Carnival's help.

Deborah Knight, 56, decided to stay in Mobile after the arduous journey was over rather than board a bus for a long ride. Her husband Seth drove in from Houston and they checked in at a downtown Mobile hotel.

"I want a hot shower and a daggum Whataburger," said Knight, who was wearing a bathrobe over her clothes as her bags were unloaded from her husband's pickup truck.

She said she was afraid to eat the food on board and had gotten sick while on the ship.

Galveston is the home port of the ill-fated ship, which lost power in an engine-room fire Sunday some 150 miles off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. It was the end of a cruise that wasn't anything like what a brochure might describe.

Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill apologized at a news conference and later on the public address system as people were disembarking.

"I appreciate the patience of our guests and their ability to cope with the situation. And I'd like to reiterate the apology I made earlier. I know the conditions on board were very poor," he said. "We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience, and clearly we failed in this particular case."

Passenger Ferguson said crew members tried to make the situation bearable.

"They did their best to keep our spirits up," she said.

Joseph and Cecilia Alvarez of San Antonio said they were on the lowest deck near the back of the ship when the fire broke out and they smelled smoke coming from the vents. She said there was confusion that night about whether to evacuate cabins, with firefighters running through the halls.

He said some passengers passed the time by forming a Bible study group that drew about 45 people.

"It was awesome," he said. "It lifted up our souls and gave us hope that we would get back."

While the passengers are headed home, Triumph will head to a Mobile shipyard for assessment, Thornton said.

Earlier Thursday ? four days after the 893-foot ship was crippled in the middle of the Gulf? the passengers and crew suffered another setback with towline issues that brought the vessel to a dead stop for about an hour just as it was getting close to port.

As the vessel drew within cellphone range Thursday, passengers vented their anger.

Renee Shanar of Houston was on board with her husband, whom she said has heart trouble. They were told they would be among the first to disembark, she said.

"I don't believe them; they've been lying to us from the beginning," Shanar said.

Disgusted by the foul air and heat on the lower decks, many passengers hauled mattresses and bed sheets onto the top deck and slept there, even staying put in a soaking rain. As the ship approached the coast, a slew of Carnival workers removed the bedding and took it downstairs.

In a text message, Kalin Hill, of Houston, described deplorable conditions over the past few days.

"The lower floors had it the worst, the floors 'squish' when you walk and lots of the lower rooms have flooding from above floors," Hill wrote. "Half the bachelorette party was on two; the smell down there literally chokes you and hurts your eyes."

She said "there's poop and urine all along the floor. The floor is flooded with sewer water ... and we had to poop in bags."

The company disputed the accounts of passengers who described the ship as filthy, saying employees were doing everything to ensure people were comfortable.

Some travel agents said cruise prices and bookings have not been affected by the disabled Carnival ship, but others in the industry say it's too early to tell.

Thelbert Lanier was waiting at the Mobile port for his wife, who texted him early Thursday.

"Room smells like an outhouse. Cold water only, toilets haven't work in 3 1/2 days. Happy Valentines Day!!! I love u & wish I was there," she said in the text message, which was viewed by The Associated Press. "It's 4:00 am. Can't sleep ... it's cold & I'm starting to get sick."

Carnival has canceled a dozen more planned voyages aboard the Triumph and acknowledged the crippled ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before the engine-room blaze. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation.

Passengers were supposed to get a full refund and discounts on future cruises, and Carnival announced Wednesday they would each get an additional $500 in compensation.

Exclusive: Former Cal football coach Jeff Tedford speaks out on his dismissal

Click photo to enlarge

Then-California Golden Bears head coach Jeff Tedford adjusts his head phones while playing the Arizona State Sun Devils in the fourth quarter of a game at UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium on Sept. 29, 2012. Arizona State defeated California 27-17.

DANVILLE -- Jeff Tedford believes athletic director Sandy Barbour already had decided to fire him as Cal football coach before the Bears' 3-9 season ended with a 62-14 loss at Oregon State.

In an exclusive interview with this newspaper -- the only one he has given since being dismissed on Nov. 20 -- Tedford said there was almost no give and take during a 30-minute meeting with Barbour the day after the season finale.

"Her decision had been made and there wasn't really anything I could say," Tedford said.

Barbour met with Cal's administration afterward, held a conference call with Tedford and chancellor Robert Birgeneau a day later and gave him her decision.

"It was very cut and dried. No explanations," he said. "After it was all said and done, I think their minds were made up a couple weeks before."

Tedford said he doesn't believe Barbour made the decision on her own. "I think the chancellor had a lot to say about it," he said.

The winningest coach in Cal history, Tedford displayed no lingering sense of bitterness after working 11 years at the university. He believes the program's poor recent academic record was a factor in his firing and acknowledged his responsibility.

"I didn't do everything right," he said. "Made some mistakes. But always with great intentions."

Tedford and his wife Donna just returned from a 10-day trip to New Zealand. They have moved to Reno and are in the process of selling their home in

Danville.

He said he plans to take this season off, then hopes to coach again. Tedford received a $5.55 million settlement for the remaining three years on his contract.

"I do feel relaxed, and yes I do have the itch," he said. "Got a chance to take a deep breath and kind of step back a little. You get on that treadmill and there's never really a minute where you're not thinking about some phase of it.

"There was a transition there that was a little difficult. It's almost like detox. ... I feel like I'm much more at ease now. I'm not as tense. It's been good. This whole thing is going to give me a chance to reflect on things I can do better and differently."

After putting some distance between himself and the disappointment of this season, Tedford said he will have mostly fond memories of his time at Cal.

"It's hard to see that if you have tunnel vision of just last year," he said. "It's really important I take that as a piece but I don't completely consume myself with that.

"There were so many good experiences."

Israel's 'Prisoner X': Death of man with alleged spy agency ties sparks debate

Israel's Ayalon prison in Ramle near Tel Aviv on February 14.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Media reports describe Prisoner X as a man who hanged himself in a secret Israeli prison
  • A new report on the case has sparked widespread debate in Israel over censorship
  • The report says the man was an Australian national recruited to join Israel's Mossad spy agency
  • For two years, a government gag order stopped local journalists from telling his story

Jerusalem (CNN) -- They call him Prisoner X.

Media reports have described him as a man who hanged himself in an Israeli prison cell. But details about what happened to him -- and why -- have long been hard to come by.

The case -- shrouded in mystery -- sparked a government gag order that for two years stopped local journalists in Israel from telling his story, according to local media reports.

For years, Israeli government officials repeatedly declined to comment on the prisoner's death, which was first reported by the Ynetnews website in 2010.

Now, a new report about the man many media have dubbed "Prisoner X" -- because his name was never revealed -- is sparking widespread debate in Israel over government censorship and about the country's prison system.

According to an investigative report this week from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, which did not disclose its sources, Prisoner X was a duel citizen of both Australia and Israel and was recruited to join Israel's Mossad spy agency. The report identified him as Ben Zygier, alleging he was detained in 2010.

Details about why he was reportedly held in a high-security prison outside Tel Aviv, and what led to his death, remain unclear, according to the ABC report.

"The case is regarded as one of the most sensitive secrets of Israel's intelligence community, with the government going to extraordinary lengths to stifle media coverage and gag attempts by human rights organizations to expose the situation," ABC Foreign Correspondent Trevor Bormann wrote.

Several prominent Israeli media organizations wrote stories about the Australian report but then were asked to remove stories about it from their website by government censors, according to Israel's Haaretz newspaper and an editor CNN spoke to.

A culture of censorship

All journalists who apply for a government-issued Israeli Press Card must sign documents agreeing to the military censorship. According to the agreement, journalists will not publish security information that could benefit Israel's enemies or harm the state.

Breaking the rule could result in card revocation, and foreign journalists could lose their visas to work in the country.

In recent years, the censorship mechanism for checking scripts and pictures has rarely been practiced. Controls over content have faded more and more with the Internet as more freedom of information passes into the public domain.

Israeli lawmakers voice concerns

But word of the Australian report and subsequent Israeli government censorship quickly rang out in the halls of Israel's Knesset, with some lawmakers sharply criticizing the government's handling of the matter.

"We hear, in a state that is supposed to be a proper democracy, that journalists are cooperating with the authorities without the high court ruling that the case is a certain and imminent danger to the security of the state," said Israeli Parliament member Zahava Gal-On, leader of the Meretz Party. "When unknown prisoners commit suicide and nobody knows who he is, how does that fit with a democracy with law which is proper?"

During the Knesset session, another lawmaker asked Israel's justice minister about the case, point blank.

"Do you know about this? Can you verify the fact that an Australian citizen committed suicide in an Israeli prison under a made-up identity and the fact was not published that he was a prisoner in a prison in Israel?" asked Ahmed Tibi, a member of the Knesset.

Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman said that the matter should be investigated but that he could not answer the questions "because the subject is not under the jurisdiction of the Justice Ministry."

On Wednesday, a district court in central Israel lifted part of the gag order and ruled that local media could quote foreign publications' reporting on the case but also said they could not do their own reporting on the story.

Later that day, a statement from an Israeli court appeared to publicly confirm details about the case for the first time.

The statement, released by the court in the partial lifting of the gag order, described a "prisoner who was both an Israeli citizen and a foreign national."

"The inmate was registered under a false identity for security reasons, but his family was notified immediately upon his arrest," the statement said.

The court document also said that the prisoner was found dead in his cell two years ago and that a judge ordered an investigation into his death.

The death was recently ruled a suicide, the statement said, and authorities are investigating whether there was negligence in the case.

Additional details in the case cannot be revealed "for reasons of state security," the document said.

Lawyer: I spoke with the prisoner shortly before his death

Human rights lawyer Avigdor Feldman said he met with the prisoner a day or two before he allegedly committed suicide.

At the time, Feldman said, the prisoner had no been tried or convicted but was indicted and in pre-trial imprisonment.

"His wife asked me to go and see him and look into some legal questions which he had," Feldman said.

Feldman said he met with the prisoner "as a lawyer who was asked not really to represent him but to consider his legal options. It's quite common."

Feldman said that while he was not aware of the details of the cell, "it is supposed to be suicide-proof."

When asked why the prisoner was being held and reports about his dealings with Iran, Feldman answered, "I can't comment unless you want to come and visit me in prison."

Australia also seeks answers

The latest developments prompted Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr to request an internal report on the case.

"I'm advised in the form of an interim report that the Australian government was informed in February 2010, though intelligence channels, that the Israeli authorities had detained a dual Australian-Israeli citizen, and they provided the name of the citizen, in relation to serious offenses under Israeli national security legislation," Carr told a Senate committee Thursday.

He did not mention what the alleged "serious offenses" were.

Carr said Australia sought specific assurances from Israel, such as that the detainee would get legal representation of his choosing and that he would not be mistreated.

"At no stage during his detention did the Australian government receive any requests from the individual or his family to extend consular support," Carr said.

"The Australian government was advised through intelligence channels on December 16, 2010, (of) this individual's death on the previous day, and the deceased's family had been notified by Israeli authorities," Carr said.

The Australian Embassy in Tel Aviv assisted in returning the body to Australia, Carr said.

Sharp criticism over secrecy

As authorities stay tight-lipped about details of the man's case, speculation continues to swirl.

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel said it sent a letter to Israel's attorney general about the case on Wednesday, criticizing the censorship and calling for the gag order to be scaled back further.

"What is far more concerning, of course, is the fact that a man was held in detention under heavy secrecy, and nothing was published about the reason for his arrest or the circumstances surrounding his death," wrote Dan Yakir, the association's chief legal counsel.

The letter argues that there is "considerable public interest" in more information about the investigation into the death of Prisoner X.

"Was it really suicide? Was there negligence in the supervision of the detainee? Has any official body taken responsibility? What steps have been taken to prevent the recurrence of similar events in the future?" Yakir asked.

Israeli government officials have made no further comments on the case.

The State of the Union vs. Chris Dorner

President Barack Obama touched on a variety of issues-- energy, jobs, technology, climate change and the middle class-- in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Yahoo News asked voters to respond to his speech. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | President Obama seemed cool and collected, as he delivered most of his State of the Union speech tonight. Then he hit it out of the park on the subject of gun control. I confess I came to tears as harangued Congress to let the subject of gun control come to a vote, over and over, in old-time revival cadence. He said the young girl killed in Chicago deserved a vote, Gabby Gifford deserved a vote, and the families in Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, and elsewhere deserved a vote. It was definitely the highlight of his speech on an emotional topic.

I've been lucky not to have been caught in any crossfire of the serial shootings we've all been subjected to on the news lately -- from Aurora to Sandy Hook, from Chris Kyle at the shooting range to Chris Dorner right in my backyard in nearby San Bernardino. (I live in Los Angeles.) But as the president readied his speech, my local news was filled with a gunfight between Dorner and police, of horrific proportions on my TV screen. Then newscasts on every television channel suddenly cut to the president's speech in the middle of it all!

It was horrifying and ironic. I was glad that Obama addressed gun control in such an attention-getting way, but was disappointed he didn't mention a ban on assault weapons. I'm proud that my representative in Congress is Sen. Diane Feinstein, a staunch advocate against assault weapons. In the end, I wished the president had said more.

Apple CEO calls Einhorn lawsuit 'a silly sideshow'

Apple's CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday rebutted criticism that his company was too tight-fisted with the $137 billion in cash it has amassed over the years, saying the tech giant "does not have a Depression-era mentality" preventing it from returning money to shareholders.

Wading into a controversy that was bought to a head last week by fund manager David Einhorn, Cook touted his company's investment in product development and research. The CEO rejected the basis of a lawsuit filed by Einhorn that the fund manager asserts will restrict Apple's ability to distribute its excess cash to its investors.

"Frankly I find it bizarre that we would find ourselves being sued for doing something that's good for shareholders," Cook told the Goldman Sachs' Technology and Internet Conference. He branded Einhorn's lawsuit as a "a silly sideshow."

Countering Einhorn's pointed criticism that the company was behaving like his cash-hoarding grandmother who lived through the Depression, Cook said his company invested $10 billion in capital expenditures last year, and would do the same this year.

"We do have some cash, but it's a privilege to be in this position ...where we can seriously consider returning additional cash to our shareholders."

He nevertheless said that Apple would "thoroughly consider" Einhorn's proposal to return cash to shareholders.

For his part, Einhorn managed to use his lawsuit to advance an issue that has dogged Apple for years. Analysts say the tech giant is notoriously parsimonious with paying dividends to its shareholders, magnified by the fact that the company's stock rose more than 31 percent in 2012.

Tim Lesko, an Apple investor at Granite Investment Advisors, told CNBC that he would prefer to see the company channel "the lion's share" of its cash to research and development. He remains "very constructive" on the stock, adding that he doesn't see "a real reason to make a change in our holdings."

In spite of sitting on a record cash haul, Apple's shares have swooned from a record high above $700 to new 52-week lows, as investors doubt the company's ability to keep pace with its competition. This week, speculation mounted that Apple would release a new watch.

Apple's culture of innovation "has never been stronger," Cook said on Tuesday, adding that it was "deeply embedded" in the value and DNA of the company. He insisted that the smartphone market would continue to be integral to the company's fortunes, based on growth trends in the all-important segment.

The company's dominance in the tablet space represents a big opportunity for Apple, Cook stated, even as challengers line up to erode the yawning market share of its iPad and iPad Mini. Tablets are growing in popularity, as consumers flock to the devices as an alternative to the traditional personal computer.

"We're in the early innings of this game," Cook said, touting projections that the 120 million units sold last year will triple over the next four years.

Cook points out that Black Friday numbers showed customers used iPads and iPhones to shop far more than their Android counterparts ... "I'm not sure what people are doing with these other tablets."

Some Apple watchers have worried that iPad Mini sales will eat into demand for its larger, more expensive iPad ? a process analysts refer to as cannibalization. Cook, however, dismissed those concerns, saying that such talk often accompanied the introduction of newer Apple products.

"The first time I got asked about cannibalization was when Apple came out with the iBook, and people were worried that it would cannibalize the PowerBook," the CEO said. "When we came out with the iPad, people worried it would cannibalize the Mac." Both the PowerBook and Mac rank among Apple's most popular products.

Mars rover driver heading to Google

NASA's Mars rover driver Scott Maxwell shared all kinds of amazing things about himself when we last spoke in August. He's a cancer survivor, for one. And his father was a railroad engineer, passionate about driving trains, while Maxwell himself has been enthusiastically controlling vehicles on Mars since 2004.

"This is the kind of thing that I, as a kid, grew up dreaming about doing, and I have been unbelievably lucky to be able to do this with part of my life," Maxwell told me.

Given how much he loves working on Mars missions, it was shocking when he revealed on social media that he would be leaving NASA for Google.

"It's a lot like when my 15-year marriage broke up: JPL and I have grown in different directions, and I'm not a good fit there anymore," he wrote on Google+. His last day at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was Friday.

Now wait a minute: What does driving a rover on Mars have to do with working for a massive company best known for its search engine? According to Maxwell, the jobs are not as different as you think.

At Google, Maxwell will be writing high-reliability software - in other words, making sure that everything runs the way it's supposed to. For instance, when you direct your browser to google.com, you should get the Google homepage. It's critical to keep errors rare, just like with software that controls equipment on Mars.

Maxwell helped write the software that has been used for the rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and for Curiosity, which landed August 6 and recently got to try out its drill on the Martian surface.

"If it fails even once you maybe don't get your commands up to the rover that day," he told me. "We can't tolerate those kinds of failures. I'm proud to say that never happened, by the way, in nearly 10 years."

From a software-development standpoint, it's not a stretch to launch into highly reliable software that happens to be controlling machines on Earth rather than Mars.

The most fun parts of the Mars rover missions were living on Mars time, he said. For Spirit and Opportunity, the schedule was pretty regular: As the rover "wakes up" 40 minutes later every day, so do you, because a day on Mars is about 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth.

Earth-observing mission is in 40th year

NASA/GSFC/Landsat

An artist's view of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission spacecraft in orbit above the Gulf Coast of the U.S.

By Nola Taylor Reed, SPACE.com

When NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) launches on Monday, it will deliver to orbit the latest and most capable Earth-observing satellite in a four-decade long project to study the surface of our planet.

Examining Earth at a resolution of a quarter of an acre, the Landsat satellites have enabled a better understanding of deforestation, glacial retreat, the shrinking Antarctic ice sheet, increasing wildfires and other big changes taking place across the planet.

"All of these changes are occurring at rates unprecedented in human history due to an increasing population," LDCM project scientist Jim Irons, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said during a press conference Friday.

"We will be able to continue monitoring these changes from the best Landsat satellite ever launched," he added. [Photos: The Next Landsat Earth-Observing Spacecraft]

A 40-year project
When astronauts first left the surface of the Earth in the 1960s, some of their first science objectives involved mapping the planet's surface. But such mapping, linked to human exploration of space, came in starts and stops, failing to provide consistent data.

The Landsat program, a joint effort of NASA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), changed all that.

Originally called the Earth Resources Technology Satellites Program when it was proposed in 1966, Landsat officially received the green light in 1970 and first reached orbit with Landsat 1 in 1972.

Each new satellite has overlapped with its predecessor, sometimes for years. Landsat 7, launched in 1999, still functions in limited capacity, while Landsat 5 was recently decommissioned after more than 28 years of service.

The LDCM spacecraft ? set to blast off Monday at 1:02 p.m. EST (1802 GMT/10:02 a.m. PST) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California ? will be the eighth satellite in the program.

It will be renamed Landsat 8 after launch and a series of on-orbit checkouts. The USGS will take over operation of the spacecraft at that point, about three months after liftoff.

Orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes, the Landsat satellites image the entire planet over the course of 16 days. When two work together, changes on the surface are captured every eight days.

Although the technology behind the satellites has improved, the programs manage enough consistency that data from the newest satellite is easily comparable to data from the original.

Each Landsat pixel measures 98 feet (30 meters) on a side, capturing enough detail for scientists to glean a great deal of information about environmental change and surface processes.

In 2009, the possibilities for Landsat data grew significantly when the entire image library was placed on the Internet for anyone to use free of charge. The archived data, which is managed by the USGS, is the longest continuous record of Earth's land surface as seen from space.

"The Landsat data plays a critical role in enabling scientific inquiry," said Mike Wulder of the Canadian Forest Service in Victoria, British Columbia. "Over time, the systematic collection and archiving of imagery since the inception of the Landsat program has enabled sophisticated scientific analysis to be taken." [The Top 10 Landsat Photos Ever]

Endless possibilities
The continuous, detailed Landsat coverage creates a wide range of possible uses.

Key among those is the management of water resources. Although almost three-fourths of the planet is covered with water, only a small fraction is available for human consumption.

"Ensuring the wise use of that scarce resource and maintaining the quality of the water within our water supply is a critical societal goal," said Tom Loveland, USGS Landsat science team manager.

Government officials use Landsat observations to monitor deforestation inside their borders. Forest services can monitor the intrusion of pests such as the mountain pine beetle and determine how they will impact day-to-day operations.

Before Landsat arrived on the scene, the forest service would make a circle on a conventional map to indicate where they thought such an infestation might be, Wulder said. Today, using Landsat data, they can look at contextual clues from the detailed coverage to determine a more precise location.

"The imagery is really allowing them to tackle different problems with a number of different approaches," Wulder said.

Landsat assisted in the identification of the breakup of West Antarctic ice shelves, which change slowly over time. By studying the shear margins, where ice flows connect to ice masses or rocky walls, scientists were able to determine the long-term change happening in Antarctica.

Landsat also helps with the management of wildfires, allowing scientists to map and monitor vegetation and fire trends and better understand the results once a fire has passed. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency also uses data from the satellites as part of a flood mitigation program.

"Both of these programs use Landsat data to measure risk, and to help our country as a whole to avoid that risk and to respond to national disasters when they occur," said Kass Green, president of Kass Green & Associates, a private company that relies on Landsat data for its remote sensing and mapping programs.

Opening Landsat to the public means that not all of its applications deal with sustaining human life. Google Earth also makes use of the freely available imagery.

"Whenever you're on Google Earth and you go into a regional level, where you look at a state, do you know what you're looking at?" Green asked. "Landsat data."

Keeping the observations going
Landsat's continuous coverage over more than four decades has been a tremendous boon for the United States and the world, researchers said. The program's 40-year history allows scientists to track not only seasonal changes but also subtle, long-term shifts in vegetation stress and water levels.

With the addition of Landstat 8 to the program, "our record will move from 40 years to 45 to 50 years, or hopefully beyond," Loveland said.

But scientists emphasized that it should not be the last mission.

"What we must all do is look forward," Green said. "We must ensure there is a Landstat program that will ensure that future generations can look back and see where we've been so they can plan where we're going."

Payday Financial Loans: Lower Interest Charge ? Mojatu.com ...

relevant site For Timely Finance Via The Web Secured Particular Financial Loan

If you contemplate that an unsecured industry personal loan is really hard to get hold of - contemplate once more - there are so a wide selection of sites these days that are happy to borrow. This industry is booming for an individual of two factors, the initially is the ease. The 2nd rationale is, even many people with not so awesome credit can be accredited for an unsecured financial loan, simply because they are usually done in property, as an alternative of thru a financial institution chain.
The next huge variation is secured compared to unsecured loans. When you have collateral, like as the automotive alone, you are participating in a secured personal loan. These many times come with decrease interest charges when you consider that there is some stability. When you acquire out a exclusive loan, most oftentimes these are unsecured financial loans, indicating you are seemingly to fork out a better fascination pace for the usefulness of not rendering collateral. No matter where exactly you acquire out your second hand motor vehicle financial loans, look at out for concealed charges to refrain from any unpleasant surprises.
There are, effortlessly, some necessities. You really should possess the dwelling you stay in, owe no much more than $729,750 on your home finance loan and have got to have negotiated your financial loan in advance of 2009. You ought to be doing payments that exceed 31% of your gross regular monthly cash and you are not able to have had your personal loan modified in the past. If you meet up with all these prerequisites, talk to with a personal planner to convey to you considerably more about it. This authorities approach aids both equally lenders and debtors, so home owners get more beneficial specials thru this application than they would when working directly with banking institutions.
Multiple loan providers place several weightings on these aspects. This clarifies why some loan providers will reject you for a credit rating card and many others will refuse you for a short term loans or mortgage loan even though other people are comfortable to welcome you as a purchaser.
Of training course, there is no such point as guaranteed acceptance on any personal loan software, but securing personal loan approval is not as complicated a process as we are very often led to are convinced. It is not a blessed dip, and if the conditions is satisfied and the correct financial institution is applied to, the likelihood of acquiring the eco-friendly mild on the application is very effective.
Many banking companies have distinct tactics of calculating the eligibility. In the scenario of Salaried, in general most of the financial institutions would work out eligibility to be one/one.5 situations of yearly salary. Issues this sort of as present loan liabilities, avg. financial institution harmony, keep track of file on existing loans loan, specialist profile & loan tenure also plays a part in deciding eligibility.
Do you will need $five,000 or a good deal more to facilitate you shell out for anything or get you out of some style of emergency problem? There are solutions, but you could very well just have to get a bit resourceful. In this article are some of the solutions you can use to get the cash you will be needing.
On the other hand, unsecured own bank loan packages are a large amount considerably more stringent. To start with, its purchaser base is comparatively scaled-down than secured credit. Awful credit score holders often do not get authorized for unsecured credit rating. Not like a secured loan offer, there is no assurance that the loaned amount of money would be returned on time. Providing a personal loan to a human being with a significantly less than ultimate credit score score is as it is a hazard. Green Blog: Fighting Off the Coffee Curse

Until this year, John Vandermeer, an ecologist and coffee researcher at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, had never lost a tree to fungus.

The smattering of orange dust that marks the seasonal arrival of the coffee rust fungus, Hemileia vastatrix, has long been commonplace. But this year, one of the worst outbreaks of the rust in memory is under way in Mexico and Central America, and Dr. Vandermeer has witnessed the die-off of 9 percent of the trees in a sample plot at his Mexican research plantation.

What is normally a lush green field now consists of ?little sticks sticking out of the ground,? he said.

The outbreak threatens to almost halve the 2013-14 coffee harvests in Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras and Costa Rica; Guatemela?s coffee industry association has already declared a state of emergency. Meanwhile, debate persists about the cause of the spread and how to arrest it.

Coffee rust appears to have originated in Sri Lanka in the 1860s before traveling to other parts of the globe. Normally, it occurs seasonally in Central America as a luminous orange powder that filigrees the edges of foliage. When the fungus enters pores on the base of leaves, it consumes tissue until the leaves die, and occasionally fall off, Dr. Vandermeer said.

The more leaves that fall and compromise a plant?s ability to photosynthesize, the fewer coffee berries the plant can produce.

Some farmers and researchers suggest that climate change may be the root cause of the sudden advance of coffee rust this season. But Dr. Vandermeer attributes it mainly to changes in farming methods.

Over time, he said, the shift from small plantations to vast fields has led landowners to turn to pesticides and fungicides to keep pests in check. But these sprays have wiped out another organism known as white halo fungus that actually attacks the coffee rust, Dr. Vandermeer said.

?What we feel we?ve seen in our system is that this white halo fungus provides partial control over the coffee rust,? he said. The systematic spraying has not only eradicated the defensive fungus, but also the insects that the white halo spores latch onto to germinate, he suggests.

?My hypothesis is that because of the gradual simplification of the coffee ecosystem, the disease has effectively escaped its controls,? he said. He has not ruled out the possibility that climate change could be playing a role as well, Dr. Vandermeer said, although ?I haven?t seen the patterns you would expect if global warming was the culprit.?

Yet Peter Baker, a senior scientist with the Center for Agricultural Bioscience International in Britain, believes that a changing climate has indeed brought on the explosion in coffee rust. The fungus enjoys a ?nice long period of humid conditions,? he said, ?and that?s what increasingly we see with these long cycles of wet weather.?

Colombia, for instance, has seen a surge in rust outbreaks in the last four years. Multiple years of very wet weather coupled with frequent spraying allow the rust spores to proliferate, Dr. Baker?s thinking goes, enabling the fungus to cross a threshold and take hold.

Others say the devil is in the details of rainfall patterns. The prolonged light rains that the region has seen may abet the creep of the orange rust, whereas heavy rainfall acts as a sluice that frees the trees and the the air of spores.

At least that?s the opinion of Phil Arneson, a retired plant pathologist who tends a small coffee plot in a remote part of Honduras. ?A good hard rain will cleanse the air of the wind-borne rust spores and even wash them off the leaves before they can germinate and infect,? he said in an e-mail. ?But a light drizzle will maintain the moisture on the leaves and provide the microenvironment that the spores need to germinate.?

Based on his observations in Colombia, however, Dr. Baker counters that the rust would capitalize on any kind of wetness, not only light rain. ?The experience of Columbia has been huge rainfalls there,? he said, and the spread has only worsened.

No matter what microclimate is the focus, nearly all of the hypotheses seem to circle back to climate change. Dr. Arneson recounts the stories of farmers he knows in Honduras: ?They tell me that they used to be able to plant by the calendar, but they can?t anymore ? the climate has gone crazy,? he said.

Dr. Vandermeer said that longer-term solutions should include scaling back the size of today?s vast, uninterrupted plantations and reducing the application of pesticides as much as possible so that natural controls can reassert themselves.

To address the scourge in the short term, Central American farmers are meanwhile turning to new variants of coffee plants crossbred with strains that are more rust-resistant. Coffee specialists say that the cup quality is not as good, but brews from the new crossbreeds are starting to improve, Dr. Baker said. He said the industry should be investing more in research into this genetic variants.

In Honduras, Dr. Arneson sees a ?bright spot on the horizon? in a new strain of resistant plants known as Lempira that farmers are experimenting with in place of the regular criollo variety.

?Right next to the criollo plants that are nearly completely bare, with just a tuft of rust-spotted leaves at the top, the Lempira plants are spotless, with dense, dark green foliage,? he said. ?I have already placed my order for the planting season at the end of May.?

North Azerbaijan: Orbital-built Azerspace/Africasat-1a Communications Satellite Successfully Launched

    BayBak, Azerbaijan | 12 hours ago | Saturday, 9th February , 2013 , 00:03 [am] | Azerbaijan

Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB), one of the world?s leading space technology companies, today announced that the company-built Azerspace/Africasat-1a commercial communications satellite was successfully launched into orbit on February 7, 2013 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. Lift-off took place at 4:36 p.m. (EST) and the satellite successfully separated from the rocket?s final stage approximately 37 minutes into the mission.

?Today is an historic day for the people of Azerbaijan. We?re proud to be the first among the South Caucus states to have a telecommunications satellite that will provide important communications services to Azerbaijan, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa,? said Elin Suleymanov, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States.

Orbital designed, built and tested the Azerspace/Africasat-1a satellite for the Azercosmos Open Joint Stock Company of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

?This satellite illustrates the important commercial relationship between U.S. industry and the Azerbaijani government. We appreciate the cooperation between The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the U.S. Import-Export Bank, and Orbital Sciences Corporation throughout this nearly three-year process. I would also like to thank the hundreds of Americans who worked to put this satellite in space. We look forward to working together on future projects as Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its communications infrastructure,? Ambassador Suleymanov concluded.

Commenting on the early status of the mission, Mr. Christopher Richmond, Orbital?s Senior Vice President of Communications Satellite Programs, said, ?The launch of Azerspace/Africasat-1a was flawless, and so far, the mission is operating smoothly. This is one of ten GEOStar-2 satellites that we are building and delivering to customers around the world over a two-year period, and the 30th such satellite the company has produced for commercial operators in the last 15 years. Global satellite operators continue to recognize us for our excellent track record of superior reliability and outstanding customer service. It is an honor to support Azercosmos with this satellite, which will expand Azerbaijan?s communications infrastructure and enhance its connectivity with other parts of the world.?

Over the next few weeks, Orbital will work with the Azercosmos engineering team to conduct in-orbit testing to verify all subsystems are operating as planned. Once testing is complete and the spacecraft is positioned at its 46* East Longitude orbital location, Orbital will turn over day-to-day operations of Azerspace/Africasat-1a to Azercosmos.

Satellite command and control operations will be carried out at control centers in Baku and Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. These facilities were designed and built by Azercosmos to support the installation of the ground control systems provided by Orbital, including ground antennas, radio-frequency electronics, computer platforms, and the software used to command, monitor and control the satellite.

Orbital designed, built and tested the Azerspace/Africasat-1a satellite in Dulles, VA at its satellite manufacturing and test facility. With an anticipated service life of 15 years, Azerspace/Africasat-1a is based on Orbital?s flight-proven GEOStar-2 platform. The hybrid C- and Ku-band satellite generates approximately five kilowatts of payload power and carries 36 active transponders, providing communications services to Azerbaijan, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Central Asia. It will operate from 46* East Longitude through an arrangement between Azercosmos and MEASAT Satellite Systems of Malaysia, which owns the rights to the orbital slot.

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. admits to campaign finance ...

The former congressman has signed a plea deal with federal prosecutors where he admitted to using campaign contributions for personal expenses. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

    By Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Updated at 2 p.m. ET:?Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has signed papers in?a plea deal with federal prosecutors in which he admits to violating campaign finance law, according to sources familiar with the case.

In the?papers, signed within the past several days, Jackson admits converting campaign contributions for personal use.?Some of the violations include using campaign funds for?a $40,000 Rolex watch, travel expenses for a friend and furniture purchased for his Washington, D.C., home. Under the terms of the deal, Jackson's sentence would be decided by a federal judge and could range from probation to prison time.

Jackson resigned from the congressional seat he held for 17 years on Nov. 21,?2012,?acknowledging?a federal investigation and citing?health?issues.? ?

"During this journey, I have made my share of mistakes," Jackson wrote in his resignation letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities, and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators, and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone. None of us is immune from our share of shortcomings or human frailties and I pray that I will be remembered for what I did right."

Those with knowledge of the investigation say some loose ends have yet to be resolved, including questions surrounding whether Jackson's wife, former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, will also be charged in connection with the case. During her husband?s political career Sandi Jackson regularly received a $5,000 a month check as his political consultant, according to NBCChicago.com.

Even before his resignation, Jackson had made plenty of headlines for his mysterious absence from Congress for much of 2012. It was later revealed the son of famed civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson had sought treatment at the Mayo Clinic for bipolar disorder.

Jackson?s resignation came just 15 days after winning re-election to his Chicago-area district by a 40-point margin. President Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) both endorsed Jackson during his primary battle with former Rep. Debbie Halvorson.

Jackson won eight full terms in Congress after winning a special election in 1995.

NBC's Chief Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and?Mary Ann Ahern of WMAQ in Chicago contributed to this report.

Pavement's percussionist is OK with you friending him after a night ...

In the old days, all you needed was a guitar, some friends, and a bottle of whiskey to make good music. Just look at the greats like Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, and even Bob Dylan. Those were the days of simple folk music. Fast forward to 2013 and half the bands today use hordes of synthesizers and electronics we can?t even pronounce the names of. But in the late ?80s, three men started making music using a simple tape recorder. This band would become the Silver Jews, and two of the members ? Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich ? would go on to form Pavement, one of the most influential indie rock bands of the ?90s.?

Lucky for us, we got to spend some time talking with Nastanovich.

Though we could wax poetic about the greatness of Pavement,?for those unfamiliar, the band started in 1989 right when the post-punk of the ?80s segued into alternative and garage rock of the ?90s. Pavement remained in the underground, signing to independent instead of major labels, and never really made it to the mainstream market. Disbanding in 1999, Pavement reunited in 2010 to a well-received worldwide reunion tour. Its first Central Park show sold out in two minutes, and the other four Central Park shows followed. Clearly, the band holds a lot of cred with music fans and has a lot more history than we?ll share here. But this interview isn?t about Pavement; it?s about Bob.

After Pavement broke up, Nastanovich got a day job. However, like his unique stage presence would suggest, Nastanovich chose an unconventional career path. Below, we talk to Nastanovich about the kind of tech he uses, how tech affects his job in the horseracing industry, and what?s on his gadget wish list.

DT: So what?s the first piece of tech you touched today?
Bob Nastanovich: Nokia Lumia 900 Windows phone. I hate this phone. It?s easy for me to access the Internet in dire situations, which would basically be for checking sports scores and the like.?

    nokia lumia 900

    Why a Windows Phone?
Free AT&T upgrade. Always used Nokia products. My first Nokia I had for about 15 years. It?s about the size of a snickers, or a Mars Bar. But I?m not a big phone guy.?

    Not at all?
I do like texting and here?s why: because even if you?re really good at it, it?s still sort of a pain in the ass, so if it were up to me, all phone communication, would be done like you would leave me a message, I would listen to that message, and then I would leave you a message back. And that?s essentially what texting is. It?s like the meat of the sandwich. It?s the best information. If you?re a blabber mouth like me, you stay off the phone.?

Have you ever owned an Android or iPhone before?
Nope. Most of these iPhone people freak out about their glass and spend all this money on their case, and it?s a crisis if they lose their phone.?
    ?
What kind of music-related technology do you use or own?
Technics SL-1210 MK2 turntable and Sherwood receiver.

What?s the last thing you listened to on your iPod (or MP3-playing device, phones included)?
    Never have used an iPod.

How do you listen to the majority of your music?
90 percent vinyl, 5 percent CDs and cassettes, 5 percent YouTube through small computer speakers.

Do you also buy music digitally?
    Never have.

    Why not?
I simply love turntables and vinyl records. Have for 30+ years.

Most kids today only know how to buy music digitally, what are they missing out on by buying music that way?
I think that the thing I can?t really grasp with buying digital music ? the thing that puts me off is I?ve always liked and have been impressed with and studied the package ? the artwork. If people have to live in small spaces, it saves them a lot of space to have their music on their computer on their iPod ? those things are tiny. And then, you lose it and you just have to redownload it. I?ve always had faith, even though it might be considered naive, that people would want the CD booklet, or the record sleeve, or the insert with the lyrics on it. Other than that, I think what they?d really miss is from the fidelity standpoint. A lot of the way that music is recorded will still sound best via vinyl on a turntable.?

Physical forms of music, like CDs and Vinyl, are great for that reason, but you?re copying vinyl records to CD because they?re getting to the point where they just don?t sound the same anymore, and they?re just not playable. But what happens if you lose that CD and that?s your only copy? How does the?impermanence and that you could possibly lose your entire music collection make you feel?
Obviously there?s natural disasters. Whenever I see these natural disasters on videos, like Katrina and what you guys went through [Sandy], it always makes me feel like, ?Oh my god, I wonder what this person actually lost.? And that?s what I would think would be at the top of my most irreplaceable items would be a lot of this vinyl collection. I?m not like Thruston Moore; I don?t have a museum of vinyl here. It?s still important to me, and it would be gone. It would just be gone, and then you?d have to figure out gradually how to rebuild certain parts, and I?d have to reinvest in trying to recoop things I wanted to get back. And I?m also keenly aware of the fact that at least 40 percent of it is probably totally irreplaceable, either due to lack of interest, or some of it I?m just not going to be able to find. It would be a tragedy, and it is an argument for the fact that you can re-access music.?

What?s the last record you bought?
Beastie Boys? ?Check Your Head? (replacement copy).
    ?
All of Pavement?s albums are available to listen to free on Spotify. A recent New York Times article reported that an artist who had her song played more than 1.5 million times over the last six months on Pandora only earned $1,652.74. The same song played 131,000 times on Spotify over the last year, totaling $548 in royalties (an average of 0.42 cents a play). What?s your take on the way streaming music sites are affecting the music industry?
I think that these sites make it more difficult for artists to sell their products. Therefore, as in the above example, they struggle to thrive even if popular. Logically speaking, [listening to a band online] would keep me from what I would have had to done 20 years ago as a DJ which is spend $8 on that record. It seems to me that the ease of which people can get music, you?re going to have to have faith that people will buy the products.?

Do you still get royalties from Pavement and the Silver Jews?
I get?royalties?still from Pavement and Silver Jews. I don?t personally know what affect streaming music has on the royalty statements. A band like Pavement from the ?90s was expected to last five or 10 years. The climate that we were in was very straight-forward?business?agreements. People were buying CDs,?cassettes, and vinyl. I?m close friends with a lot of people on a pretty small record label here in Iowa called Maximum Ames, and I know in addition to all of the other formats of music, they offer free downloads. I?m just?ignorant?in regards to that technology. I?ve never used it. I never really listened to that much music on the go. I never had a Walkman. All the listening I do is at home, or at friends houses on speakers on a stereo system, and then in the car. I?ve driven with people who?ve hooked up their phone or their iPod to a docking station in their car ? my car is old, and I have a cassette deck in it, so I pretty much listen to the radio. I?ll see?cassettes?in a?thrift?store every once in a while for a dollar and buy them, but I?m really sort of unhip or not up to date. ?

How do you feel about streaming concerts online for free? This way, people don?t even have to leave their homes to watch a live show.
That doesn?t bother me. Because live music will always be a more heightened experience than watching a video. Watching a streamed concert may convince someone to go out and see a show. A few of the shows we played in 2010 were streamed live ? but the entire Pitchfork festival was streamed live with the exception of us and one other band [Broken Social Scene], and without consulting us, our guitar player Scott?[Kannberg] said Pavement didn?t want to be streamed, which sort of pissed off the Pitchfork people. I thought it was not very sensible. I would?ve?definitely?said stream it, the thing?s sold out. What difference does it make?

I think really the main reason you?d do that is that you?re looking forward to seeing the band yourself and you want to see what they look like live, so you?re seeking confirmation, or you?re looking forward to their concert coming to your town and you?re going to go anyway, and you want to see what it?s like. It?s the same kind of thing as listening to the cassette or the CD when you?re driving to the concert. I think that can only spur more?enthusiasm?going to see live music.?

When you travel, what?s in your bag (gadget-wise)?
Just my phone and my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop.

The Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop came out more than six years ago. When did you get yours and why haven?t you upgraded?
[Got it in] 2009, used for $200, [and] it does the job. ?

In addition to playing with Pavement, you also jumped into the sport of horse racing early on. When and how did you start getting involved with horse racing?
I became a fan of betting on horse races as a teenager.

We know you chart races for Equibase by visiting racetracks, watching races, and recording the data. Can you explain what you do and what Equibase is?
I?m a chart caller. I watch the races at Prairie Meadows through binoculars on the fifth floor and call out the positions of the horse at various designated points in the races. Then, I write a formatted brief synopsis in the minutes following each race.

Do you do that electronically now, and was it different when you started?
Yes via company-provided laptops [that stay on their desks in a secure office] hooked up to high-speed Internet. For the first few years, we still had dial-up.?

We imagine that following races 20 years ago was a lot different than it is now. How has technology changed the way people play the horses?
Most horseplayers now stay at home, place bets on their computers, and watch on cable, Dish, or live streams.

Races happen every day all over the world. Do you follow other races outside of the U.S. How do you do that?
Every day, with only the rare exception, I watch English and Irish horse races via stream at twinspires.com and listen to audio analysis at williamhillradio.com.

Have you ever lost a significant amount of money playing the horses while sitting in front of the computer?
    Yes.?Lost $1,000, and won over $2,500.

Are there any other ways in which you use tech?
Social media, fantasy sports, shopping, and paying bills.

Has social media changed what it means to be a former member of Pavement? Is it hard to function online as a celebrity?
I have an entirely open, totally public Facebook profile. I don?t do too many tweets. I tried to do Twitter for about a year because it?s good for up-to-date horse-racing information. It?s good for people who actually have a clue, who are at a certain race track, who are tweeting about how a horse is behaving in the paddock before a race, and I find that to be very useful information. I was doing that for a while, but my Twitter account got hacked twice. I don?t think it has anything to do with who I am.

Can you tell us more about your presence on Facebook?
As far as friends on Facebook, I think I have about 2,200 friends, and over 1,000 of those are Pavement fans who I don?t know. There?s also a?certain?high percentage of Pavement fans that I?ve met once, and I have no problems with that. I sometimes have to take people out of my news feed because they?re constantly putting up pictures of like Hooters girls bending over and stuff. ?Another guy was putting up scantily-clad photos of women covered head to toe in tattoos, and that kind of stuff just doesn?t make my day brighter, so I took that guy out of my feed. But I have a totally open profile, and I don?t even think twice about it. People are extremely nice. They can look at all my pictures. I don?t care. I live in De Moines, Iowa. I?ve never felt the need for any type of protection or security in any regard. I don?t really feel like I?m a big ?whatever?. I work at?Prairie?Meadows racetrack, I was in a band that was cool in the ?90s, it was a fantastic experience, and I?ve been fortunate enough to own a few race horses that have won horse races ? it?s very pleasant that people treat me with a large degree of respect. I don?t mind that at all. I?ve been pretty in touch with my little reality over here. That?s why on Facebook, I?m just going to be like anybody else.?

Have you ever encountered any weirdos on Facebook?
I can?t really remember if it?s ever happened. I?ve had a couple of people write stuff to me on Facebook and then the next day I?ll get a message saying: ?Dude, I was so wasted last night, I hope I didn?t embarrass myself.? I don?t care. I know what?s it?s like to drink 23 beers and start?watching?Pavement videos on YouTube and then getting on Facebook and writing ?that was awesome what you did,? and then being like ?oh my god, I just Facebooked the dude from Pavement last night.? The original premise of Silver Jews was that we had Thurston [Moore] and Kim?s [Gordon] home number when they lived in?Manhattan, and we played the first songs we made up directly into their answering machine. It?s the same kind of thing. It?s a glorious?privilege, and I don?t mind any of that stuff.?

Is there anything on your gadget wish list right now?
    iPad mini.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A fired police officer who threatened to bring "warfare" to the Los Angeles Police Department went on a shooting rampage that left a policeman and two others dead and set off an extraordinary manhunt that had three states and Mexico on alert for much of Thursday.

The search for Christopher Dorner led hair-trigger officers to mistakenly shoot at innocent citizens and forced police to guard their own.

But the focus of police efforts shifted Thursday afternoon to the snowy mountains around Big Bear Lake, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, where police found Dorner's burned-out pickup truck and tracks leading away from the vehicle.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said 125 officers were going door to door and attempting to track the suspect, and that a SWAT team was providing added security to those in the community. Schools were put on lockdown while investigators examined the vehicle and spread out across the area.

"He could be anywhere at this point, and that's why we're searching door to door," McMahon said, adding that the manhunt would continue "as long as we can." A snow storm was expected in the region with temperatures dipping into the teens overnight.

Said LAPD Assistant Chief Michel Moore: "This complex and violent investigation has led to this mountain."

The pickup was to be processed at a crime lab Thursday evening and examined by investigators from multiple agencies.

Throughout the day, thousands of heavily armed officers patrolled highways throughout Southern California, while some stood guard outside the homes of people police say Dorner vowed to attack in a rant posted online. Electronic billboards, which usually alert motorists about the commute, urged them to call 911 if they saw him.

"I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare" to Los Angeles Police Department officers, on or off duty, said the manifesto. It also asserted: "Unfortunately, I will not be alive to see my name cleared. That's what this is about, my name. A man is nothing without his name."

Dorner, 33, had several weapons including an assault rifle, said police Chief Charlie Beck, who urged him to surrender at a news conference held amid heightened security in an underground room at police headquarters.

"Of course he knows what he's doing; we trained him. He was also a member of the Armed Forces," he said. "It is extremely worrisome and scary."

The nearly 10,000-member LAPD dispatched officers to protect more than 40 potential targets, including police officers and their families. The department also pulled officers from motorcycle duty, fearing they would make for easy targets.

"I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, I'm terminating yours," the manifesto said.

At one point, officers guarding one location mistakenly opened fire on a pickup truck, believing it matched the description of Dorner's dark-colored 2005 Nissan Titan. Two occupants were injured.

The chief said there had been a "night of extreme tragedy in the Los Angeles area" and that the department was taking measures to ensure the safety of officers.

The search for Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements, began after he was linked to a weekend killing in which one of the victims was the daughter of a former police captain who had represented him during his disciplinary hearing. Thursday was the anniversary of his first day on the job at the department eight years ago.

Monica Quan and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, were found shot in their car at a parking structure at their condominium on Sunday in Irvine. Quan, 28, was an assistant women's basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton. Lawrence, 27, was a public safety officer at the University of Southern California.

Police said Dorner implicated himself in the couple's killings in the manifesto posted on Facebook. They believe he was the one who wrote it because there were details in it only he would know.

In the post, Dorner wrote that he knew he would be vilified by the LAPD and the news media, but that "unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name."

Dorner was with the LAPD from 2005 until 2008.

According to documents from a court of appeals hearing, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans. Dorner said that in the course of an arrest, Evans kicked suspect Christopher Gettler, a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

Richard Gettler, the schizophrenic man's father, gave testimony that supported Dorner's claim. After his son was returned home on July 28, 2007, Richard Gettler asked "if he had been in a fight because his face was puffy" and his son responded that he was kicked twice in the chest by a police officer.

Quan's father, a former LAPD captain who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner, police said. Randal Quan retired in 2002 and later served as chief of police at Cal Poly Pomona before he started practicing law. Quan did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Dorner said in his online rant that after his dismissal that he lost everything, including his relationships with his mother, sister and close friends.

"Self-preservation is no longer important to me. I do not fear death as I died long ago," the manifesto said. "I was told by my mother that sometimes bad things happen to good people. I refuse to accept that."

Dorner said he would use all of his training to avoid capture and track his targets.

Dorner also had served in the Naval Reserves, earning a rifle marksman ribbon and pistol expert medal. He was assigned to a naval undersea warfare unit and various aviation training units, according to military records, and took a leave from the LAPD and deployed to Bahrain in 2006 and 2007.

"I will utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordinance and survival training I've been given," the manifesto read. "You have misjudged a sleeping giant."

Earlier Thursday, two LAPD officers en route to provide security to one of Dorner's possible targets, were flagged down by a resident at a gas station in Corona who reporting seeing the suspect. The officers then followed a pickup truck until it stopped. The driver, believed to be Dorner, got out and fired a rifle, police said. A bullet grazed an officer's head.

Later, two officers on routine patrol in neighboring Riverside were ambushed at a stoplight by a motorist who drove up next to them and opened fire with a rifle. One died and the other was seriously wounded but was expected to survive, Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz said.

Diaz said news organizations should withhold the officers' names because the suspect had made clear that he considers police and their families "fair game."

The hunt for Dorner also led to two errant shootings in the pre-dawn darkness Thursday.

LAPD officers guarding a target named in the manifesto shot and wounded two women in suburban Torrance who were in a pickup truck, authorities said. Beck said one woman was in stable condition with two gunshot wounds and the other was being released after treatment.

"Tragically we believe this was a case of mistaken identity by the officers," Beck said.

Minutes later, Torrance officers responding to a report of gunshots encountered a dark pickup matching the description of Dorner's, police said. A collision occurred and the officers fired on the pickup. The unidentified driver was not hit and it turned out not to be the suspect vehicle, they said.

In San Diego, where police say Dorner tied up an elderly man and unsuccessfully tried to steal his boat Wednesday night, Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday after a Navy worker reported seeing someone who resembled Dorner.

Navy Cmdr. Brad Fagan said officials believe Dorner had checked into a base hotel on Tuesday and left the next day without checking out. Numerous agencies guarded the base on Thursday. Fagan said Dorner was honorably discharged and that his last day in the Navy was last Friday.

Nevada authorities also joined the search, because Dorner owns a house nine miles from the Las Vegas Strip, according to authorities and property records.
