Latest discovery published in cover feature of top science journal Nature

Bulky and noisy air-conditioning compressors and refrigerators may soon be a thing of the past.

With the latest discovery by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), current cooling systems which uses refrigerant harmful to the ozone layer could be replaced by a revolutionary cooling system using lasers.

This discovery, published and featured on the cover of the 24 January 2013 issue of Nature, the world's top scientific journal, could also potentially lead to a host of other innovations. This includes making huge Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, unwieldy night vision goggles and satellite cameras - all of which require extreme cooling systems - even more compact and energy saving.

This breakthrough in laser cooling technology can even lead to the development of almost sci-fi like computer chips that cool on their own, minimising heat and thus prolonging battery life for portable devices like tablets and smart phones.

Assistant Professor Xiong Qihua from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had cooled down a semiconductor from 20 degrees Celsius down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Before this, the cooling of semiconductors by laser has never been proven.

The material, Cadmium Sulfide, is a type of group II-VI semiconductor commonly used in solar cells, sensors and electronics.

"If we are able to harness the power of laser cooling, it would mean that medical devices which require extreme cooling, such as MRI which uses liquid helium, could do away with their bulky refrigerant systems with just with an optical refrigeration device in its place," Prof Xiong said.

"Not only that, but it would also remove the need for compressors and coolants in air-conditioning and refrigerators used in our homes and automobiles, saving space, energy and green house gases which are harmful to our ozone layer.

The potential for a compact, cost-effective, vibration-free and cryogen-less cooling system is enormous, as the global market for energy-efficient buildings is estimated to be worth over $100 billion dollars by 2017, according to reports by Global Industry Analysts (GIA).

"This also translates into the ability to build miniaturised coolers to cool infrared sensors used in satellites for imaging and build self-cooling computer chips suitable for use in portable devices like tablets and smart phones."

Prof Xiong, who leads a research team of 25 people including three undergraduates, is now looking to bring laser cooling down to liquid helium temperature at minus 269 degree Celsius. This is because in principle and theory, semiconductors can support laser cooling down to such a low temperatures.

"Our initial results published in Nature, have shown that it is possible to laser-cool a semiconductor to liquid nitrogen temperature, so we are aiming to reach an even lower temperature, such as that of liquid helium," said Prof Xiong, who had directed the research efforts of his researchers Dr. Zhang Jun and Ph.D. student Li Dehui towards this new area.

This experiment which took three years to complete was funded by NTU, Prof Xiong's National Research Foundation Fellowship grant and the Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund.

NTU's ground-breaking research into fundamental physics and sciences is one of the key components in Sustainability, one of the university's Five Peaks of Excellence, areas of research which NTU hopes to make a global mark in under its five-year strategic plan.

Such a development of a laser cooling system will also benefit other key research areas, such as Future Healthcare which is also a Peak of Excellence. Other peaks include New Media, Innovation Asia and the Best of East and West.

Surface Pro comes out of the box two-thirds full

Microsoft's highly?anticipated Surface Pro tablet, which runs the full version of Windows 8 rather than the poorly?received Windows RT, will come out of the box with nearly two-thirds of its 64 GB of storage filled up. The 128 GB version will likewise boot up with far less room?than many users expect to see.

Microsoft, which confirmed the information to NBC News,?was quick to add that much of this space can be reclaimed, although the method is not one?that tech novices will likely?understand or undertake. Nor are the reasons for the reduced space particularly easy to grasp without some explanation:

First, the gigabytes listed on any gadget's box don't actually correspond to the way computers think about data. The result is that 64 GB shown?on the box (whether the device?runs Windows, Android, or iOS) really translates to 59?of what the computer actually uses ("gibibytes," if you must know).

Second, Windows is a much larger and more complex piece of software than what you find on an Android tablet or iPad. It is, after all, a full-on desktop operating system ? it can do more, run programs from years back, and so on. So naturally, it takes up more space.

Third, because it's a "real" OS, it takes backup very seriously, keeping a "recovery partition," or backup of itself right there on the device ? which takes up even more space. And then you have the built-in apps and the trial version of Office 2013. The end result is that the 64 GB Surface comes out of the box with just 23 GB of usable space, and the 128 GB version is reduced to 83 GB.

The new Apple iPad with 128 GB of space, on the other hand, will likely have about 115 GB out of the box.

The Windows RT tablet had a similar problem, shipping with about half its?space full, resulting in a consumer?backlash, despite Microsoft's insistence that the space crunch was unavoidable.

Users can delete installed apps and move the recovery partition to external storage or delete it entirely, but these tasks aren't exactly simple, especially for less-experienced users.

The capabilities of the Surface Pro tablets are in many ways far beyond those of competing tablets and even many laptops. Microsoft made sure to mention the fact that the device's USB 3.0 interface,?SDXC card slot?and free SkyDrive storage allow for lots of extra storage. But users simply may not be able to get over the fact that their premium device came out of the box with nowhere near the amount of free space they expected.

The Surface Pro will be out in the U.S. on February 9th. The 64 GB version will retail for $899; the 128 GB model, $999.

I would never date a friend, never ever. I love my friends and only have a handful of them. Reguardless of if they were attracted to me or whatever, I just don't feel romantic towards them in any way, shape or form. My friends have been friend zoned for almost 20 years, been completely smashed around them and never once has anything even remotely sexual happened between us. They've always respected my boundaries and never pushed to be more than friends.

Probably helps that as far as I know they've never been attracted to me, and I've never been attracted to them lol. Which is just fine with me

Stocks edge higher, pushing Dow toward 14,000

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks edged higher on Wall Street, pushing the Dow toward 14,000, as investors digested the latest round of earnings and economic reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 57 points to 13,939 points as of noon EST. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose five points to 1,505 points. The Nasdaq composite dropped less than a point to 3,153.

Stocks are approaching record levels after a January rally that has pushed the Dow 6.2 percent higher this month and the S&P 500 up 5.3 percent, its highest level since December 2007. Demand was bolstered after lawmakers reached a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" at the start of the year and by reports that have added to evidence showing that the U.S. housing market is recovering and the jobs market is slowly healing.

Homebuilder D.R. Horton gained $2.04 to $23.35 after it said that net income more than doubled as the housing recovery took hold. Improving home prices and better sales bolstered profits. Drugmaker Pfizer rose 83 cents to $27.67 after the company said its fourth-quarter profit more than quadrupled because of a $4.8 billion gain from selling its nutrition business, despite competition from generic drugs hurting sales.

Investor optimism was checked by a report that showed U.S. consumer confidence sank in January to the lowest level in more than a year as Americans fretted about the economic outlook and higher Social Security taxes. The Conference Board said that its consumer confidence index dropped to 58.6 in January, down from a reading of 66.7 in December.

Stocks also failed to get much of a lift from a report published before the market opened that showed the U.S. housing market is sustaining its recovery.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 5.5 percent in November compared with the same month a year ago, pushed higher by rising sales and a tighter supply of available homes.

"The turnaround in the housing market is for real," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, who says the decline in consumer confidence will likely prove to be temporary as home prices rise. He predicts that the S&P 500 may climb as high as 1,575 this quarter as investor optimism about the economic recovery grows.

The Federal Reserve starts a two-day meeting Tuesday. Investors will also be looking at the release of their statement Wednesday for clues about the outlook for the economy and interest rates.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose by 1 basis point to 1.97 percentage points. The yield on the note, which moves inversely to its price, rose briefly above 2 percent for the first time since April during trading Monday.

Other stocks in the news;

? Ford fell 81 cents to $12.97 despite reporting earnings that beat analysts' estimates. The automaker said that its losses in Europe would be bigger than it had previously forecast. The company's stock has advanced 56 percent in the last six months.

? Seagate Technology, which makes hard disk drives for storage, fell $3.25 to $34.16 after it reported a 13 percent drop in profits as expenses outpaced revenue growth.

? Software company VMware fell $20.05 to $78.27 after it said that it late Monday that it expects first-quarter revenue to come in lower than Wall Street analysts had forecast. The company is also cutting 900 jobs, or about 7 percent of its workforce.

U.S. warns Antigua against "government-authorized piracy"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Monday warned the tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda not to retaliate against U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling by authorizing the "theft" of U.S. intellectual property.

"Government-authorized piracy would undermine chances for a settlement" in the Internet gambling case, said Nkenge Harmon, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

"It also would serve as a major impediment to foreign investment in the Antiguan economy, particularly in high-tech industries," Harmon said.

The World Trade Organization authorized Antigua in 2007 to suspend copyright protection on about $21 million of U.S. intellectual property annually after Washington failed to comply with a ruling against a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

The Caribbean nation on Monday put the United States on notice that it intended to proceed with that action unless the two sides soon reach a negotiated settlement.

"The economy of Antigua and Barbuda has been devastated by the United States Government's long campaign to prevent American consumers from gambling online with offshore gaming operators," Antiguan Finance Minister Harold Lovell said in a statement.

At its height, the remote gaming industry in Antigua was the country's second largest employer, and leading international gaming economists estimated that the industry was worth more than $3.4 billion to the Antiguan economy, the country estimated.

Currently, less than 500 people are employed in the gaming sector, compared to more than 4,000 at its height.

"This economic devastation has been caused by the direct actions of the United States," the government statement said.

Mass funeral held in Egypt after riots kill 37

PORT SAID, Egypt (AP) ? Tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets of the restive Egyptian city of Port Said on Sunday for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people killed in rioting a day earlier, chanting slogans against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Violence erupted briefly when some in the crowd fired guns and police responded with volleys of tear gas, witnesses said. State television reported 110 were injured.

"We are very worried about what may happen after the burial," said local youth activist Rasha Hamouda, noting the city was fraught with tension.

There was also a funeral in Cairo for one of two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for two colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses. The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.

Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him.

The violence in the city, about 140 miles northeast of Cairo, broke out on Saturday after a court on Saturday convicted and sentenced 21 defendants to death for their roles in a mass soccer riot in a Port Said stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 people dead. Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said. The 21 were convicted on murder charges and the court is to rule on the remainder of the 73 defendants in March.

The riots stemmed mostly from animosity between police and die-hard Egyptian soccer fans, known as Ultras, who have become highly politicized. The Ultras frequently confront police and were also part of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime two years ago.

They were also at the forefront of protests against the military rulers who took over from Mubarak and are now again on the front lines of protests against the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected leader.

Mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.

There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said the gunfire came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery.

A witness said the police responded to the gunfire with volleys of tear gas. The witness and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

Survivors and witnesses of the Port Said soccer melee blame Mubarak loyalists for the violence, saying they had a hand in instigating the killings. The troubles erupted after Port Said's home team Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly 3-1. Some witnesses said "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts and posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.

Other witnesses said at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the soccer violence, which killed 74 people, most of them Al-Ahly fans.

Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed.

The trial was in Cairo and Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the guilty verdicts and sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are to be delivered on March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

In Port Said on Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.

The military issued a statement urging Port Said residents to exercise restraint and protect public property, but also warning that troops would deal "firmly" with anyone who "terrorizes" citizens or infringes upon the nation's security and stability.

Rioters on Saturday attacked the prison where the defendants were being held and tried to storm police stations and government offices around the city. Health officials say at least 37 people were killed, including two policemen, in rioting on Saturday.

The clashes in Port Said were the latest in a bout of unrest across the country that has left a total of 48 people dead since Friday. That death toll includes 11 people killed in clashes between police and protesters marking the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew Mubarak after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Clashes broke out in Cairo for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.

The clashes show how turmoil was deepening in Egypt nearly seven months after Morsi took office. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms of the judiciary and police, and claim little has improved in the two years since the uprising.

At the heart of the rising opposition toward Morsi's government is a newly adopted constitution, which was ratified in a nationwide referendum.

Opponents claim the document has an Islamist slant. It was drafted hurriedly by the president's allies without the participation of representatives of liberals and minority Christians on the panel that wrote the charter.

Protesters on the streets this past week demanded the formation of a national unity government, early presidential elections and amendments to disputed clauses in the constitution.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which he hails, counter that the opposition was seeking to overturn the results of democratic and free elections. The Brotherhood, a well-organized and established political group in Egypt for decades, has emerged as by far the most powerful force in post-Mubarak Egypt.

As the situation in Port Said spiraled out of control Saturday, police disappeared from the city's streets, residents and security officials said, staying put in their camps, police stations and the city's security headquarters.

The military then dispatched troops to the city, taking up positions at vital state facilities, including the local power and water stations, the city's main courthouse, the local government building and the city prison. Navy sailors were guarding the local offices of the Suez Canal company.

Navy vessels were escorting merchant ships sailing through the international waterway, a vital income earner for Egypt's beleaguered economy. Military helicopters were flying over the canal to ensure the safety of shipping, according to Suez Canal spokesman Tareq Hassanein.

Residents said Port Said was quiet overnight except for intermittent bursts of gunfire. The city was still on edge early Sunday ? but streets were largely deserted, stores were closed for the second successive day, and some hotels asked guests to leave, fearing more violence.

Richard (RJ) Eskow: As Federal Prosecutors Cash In, Big Bankers Go Unpunished

We needed heroes after the financial crisis. Instead we got bureaucrats, compromisers, and perhaps something much worse. Federal law enforcement officials, our "thin gray line" against banker crime, were charged with restoring the balance of justice and reducing the threat of future crises. Seems they had other things on their minds.

Now the Administration's first-term posse is riding off into the sunset. The most visible departure is Deputy Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Remember those submissive or avaricious sheriffs in the old Westerns, the ones who were always letting the bad guys run wild ???"Sorry, Ma'am, I'd like to help you and the boy but there ain't nothin' I can do." ?That's Breuer, whose shattered credibility and extreme reluctance to prosecute has become the stuff of legend. ?

But he's not the only one. Meet the senior partners in a firm that be more aptly named "Covington, Burling, and Justice."

Lanny Breuer

All it took was a well-edited compilation of his own words on PBS'?Frontline?to spur an announcement of Breuer's unscheduled resignation. (Mary Bottari has the Frontline highlights.) They're denying any connection between the program and the resignation, of course, but the denials ring false. Breuer was already on the record in a speech before the New York City Bar Association as saying that "we must take into account the effect of an indictment on innocent employees and shareholders" at major Wall Street firms.

That's like not arresting Tony Soprano because they'd all be out of a job down at the Bada Bing Club.

And note ?that Breuer did not say "We must take into account the effect of unpunished wrongdoing on defrauded investors, homeowners, or the American and global economies." ?The entire premise is bogus anyway. It's possible to criminally indict individual bankers without bringing down the whole bank. If necessary, the government can assume control of a failing institution to make sure that its workforce stays employed.

Besides, when did prosecutors start worrying about stock market value before deciding whether or not to indict suspected crooks? It must've been after Wall Street wrongdoing brought down the world economy and shattered global markets.

This anarchic reasoning reached its apotheosis (or nadir) with the Justice Department's recent refusal to indict anyone at HSNBC for laundering money on behalf the murderous Mexican drug cartels. ?Here's what that means in very real terms: If you work at a big bank you can fatten your bonus by breaking the law as many times as you want. You won't even be punished for colluding with crazed drug-dealing killers who have murdered 35,000 people, sometimes by tossing their severed heads onto a club's dance floor or leaving them in the town square to show everybody who's boss.

We know who's boss on Wall Street, too.

If Attorney General Holder endorses Breuer's thinking he's had the good sense to keep it to himself. But Breuer, who met Holder when they both worked for Wall Street firm Covington & Burling, couldn't resist the temptation to brag. Still, shed no tears. Public shame can be a ticket to Wall Street prosperity.

Robert Khuzami

Robert Khuzami was Breuer's partner in crime non-punishment over at the SEC. ?Khuzami ran the agency's enforcement division until his resignation was announced earlier this month. That inspired a Ben Protess puff piece?in the New York Times Dealbook?page that reads?like a regulatory?Fifty Shades of Gray?- call it?Fifty Shades of Gray Pinstripe -?with Khuzami as the "dominant" and the rest of us as "submissives.' We're told that Khuzami is "an imposing presence with a piercing stare," an effect he tries to replicate for the camera with lamentable results.

We're also told Khuzami had "a knack for grilling lawyers" who worked for him - a knack that clearly did not extend to bankers under his scrutiny.

Dealbook claimed that Khuzami's accomplishments include "becoming the public face of Wall Street enforcement and reining in firms like Goldman Sachs." ?Make that the public face of non-enforcement, as firms like Goldman Sachs openly mocked and defied enforcement efforts. ?While his Justice Department colleagues looked the other way - at behavior that allegedly included Congressional perjury by Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein - Khuzami dutifully allowed executives at Goldman and other firms to buy their way out of trouble with other people's money while "neither admitting nor denying wrongdoing."

Note to journalists: It's possible for a fine to be "record breaking" in its size and also be inadequate for the gravity of the offense. That's the Goldman Sachs story - and Khuzami's. And since the fine was paid by shareholders, not the perps themselves, there's no incentive not to keep committing the same crimes. ?Dealbook informs us?that Khuzami, the former general counsel for Deutsche Bank, is "is positioned for a lucrative job at a white-shoe law firm." Tell us something we didn't?know.

We're also told that Khuzami told his employees to ask themselves every evening, "How did I add value today?" Which begs the question: Value for whom?

Halls of Injustice

Bobby Kennedy took on the racketeers when he ran the Justice Department, and the motto on the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building says "Justice is founded in the rights bestowed by nature upon man. Liberty is maintained in security of justice." It may be time to update both the building's name and the letters engraved on its facade.

Peter Schweizer?notes that?Covinton & Burling, which gave us both Breuer and Holder, "currently represents Wells Fargo and J.P. Morgan Chase ... Bank of America, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, ING, Morgan Stanley, UBS, and Wilmington Trust - many of which the Department has investigated for potential criminal activity."

Schweizer also observes that when Lanny Breuer ran Covington's white-collar defense team, "his counselor at Justice was another colleague from Covington, Steve Fagell, who was responsible for coordinating the Criminal Division's work with the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. Fagell returned to Covington in 2010 to rejoin the firm's white-collar defense practice."

We're not saying Covington & Burling?is?the Justice Department. Think of it more as lead counsel - for the defense, of course. ?But other firms get a piece of the action, too. Another?analysis from Dealbook?(which has multiple contributors) noted that senior Justice Department oficial Greg Andres, who worked for Breuer at Justice, went to Covington competitor Davis & Polk.

Dealbook also notes that "Recent moves (from Holder's Justice Department) include Christine A. Varney, the government's former top antitrust lawyer, who?left last year?to join Cravath, Swaine & Moore, and Boyd M. Johnson III, the former deputy United States attorney in Manhattan, who recently departed for WilmerHale."

The New Sheriff

Greg Andres' new firm also employs Linda Chatman Thomsen, Robert Khuzami's predecessor as the SEC's head of enforcement. Now Obama has nominated Mary Jo White to run the entire SEC, and lots of smart people are hopeful.

It's true that White was a tough and aggressive prosecutor - a "total badass,"?says?Business Insider - pursuing targets like John Gotti and Osama Bin Laden. But then she turned in her badge and went to work for the other side like the others, defending Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis - among the worst of the worst - as well as JPMorgan Chase and the board of Morgan Stanley (a group which includes Erskine Bowles of "Simpson Bowles" notoriety.)

It's easy to lose your edge once you become part of a social circle. Jailing your friends and clients begins to feel unimaginable. ?Still, White's got guts and character. ?Let's make the forecast 'guardedly optimistic,' with some of the 'guarded' part coming from concerns about the Justice Department/Covington & Burling gang. They can make her task easier ... or much, much harder.

Executive Inaction

It's the President and the Attorney General who call the shots, and who will ultimately be judged by their actions - or lack thereof. Change can only come from the top. ?What are the prospects?

Judge for yourselves: Last week the Obama/Holder Justice Department told producers of Frontline's hard-hitting report that "they thought (the bank crime episode) was a hit piece" and that "they will never co-operate" with the program again.

Ask not for whom the revolving door turns, Wall Street. As of this writing, it still turns for thee.

Witch-hunting "Hansel & Gretel" wins box office

(Reuters) - A grown-up "Hansel & Gretel" grabbed the weekend box office title, pulling in $19 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales with its reinvention of the classic fairy tale characters as fierce bounty hunters.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" knocked last weekend's winner, low-budget horror flick "Mama," into second place. "Mama" earned $12.8 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates, followed by "Silver Linings Playbook" with $10 million.

CIA drama "Zero Dark Thirty" came in fourth with $9.8 million.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in "Hansel & Gretel" as crossbow-wielding adult siblings who travel the world to take out evil witches. MGM and Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures produced the action comedy for about $50 million. Paramount had predicted opening weekend sales in the high-teens or low $20 million range.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, said the film performed well despite the very cold temperatures and snow that hit the eastern United States.

"We are pleased that we were on our number on a worldwide basis. It looks like we are on or exceeding our numbers, but we did get dinged with the weather on Friday," he said in an interview.

"The impact of the weather was certainly more than I had predicted."

"Mama" features Jessica Chastain as a woman forced to take care of two orphaned nieces who have been living in the woods. The $15 million production has now earned $48.6 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters through two weekends.

Chastain also stars in "Zero Dark Thirty" in an Oscar-nominated role as a dogged CIA agent searching for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The best picture nominee, which has sparked debate over depictions of torture, has grossed $69.9 million since its release in late December.

"Silver Linings Playbook," another Oscar contender, stars Bradley Cooper as a former mental patient trying to rebuild his life with the help of a young widow played by Jennifer Lawrence. Total sales for "Silver Linings" reached $69.46 million.

New crime thriller "Parker" finished in fifth place, taking in $7 million at domestic theaters. The film is based on a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake and stars Jason Statham as a thief seeking revenge against a crew that double-crossed him. Jennifer Lopez plays a woman who helps with his mission.

"Movie 43," a raunchy new comedy with an ensemble of Hollywood directors and stars, settled for seventh place. The film is a series of related short films about three kids scouring the Internet to find the world's most-banned movie. Stars making appearances include Huge Jackman, Seth MacFarlane, Kate Winslet and Dennis Quaid. Privately held Relativity Media produced the film for about $6 million.

"Mama" was distributed by Universal Studios, a division of Comcast Corp. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Zero Dark Thirty." "Parker" was released by independent studio FilmDistrict. The Weinstein Co distributed "Silver Linings Playbook."

Japanese researchers show for the first time that primates modify their body movements to be in tune with others, just like humans do. Humans unconsciously modify their movements to be in synchrony with their peers. For example, we adapt our pace to walk in step or clap in unison at the end of a concert. This phenomenon is thought to reflect bonding and facilitate human interaction. Researchers from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute report today that pairs of macaque monkeys also spontaneously coordinate their movements to reach synchrony.

This research opens the door to much-needed neurophysiological studies of spontaneous synchronization in monkeys, which could shed light into human behavioral dysfunctions such as those observed in patients with autism spectrum disorders, echopraxia and echolalia where patients uncontrollably imitate others.

In the research, published today in the journal Scientific Reports, the team led by Naotaka Fujii developed an experimental set-up to test whether pairs of Japanese macaque monkeys synchronize a simple push-button movement.

Before the experiment, the monkeys were trained to push a button with one hand. In a first experiment the monkeys were paired and placed facing each other and the timing of their push-button movements was recorded. The same experiment was repeated but this time each monkey was shown videos of another monkey pushing a button at varying speeds. And in a last experiment the macaques were not allowed to either see or hear their video-partner.

The results show that the monkeys modified their movements increased or decreased the speed of their push-button movement - to be in synchrony with their partner, both when the partner was real and on video. The speed of the button pressing movement changed to be in harmonic or sub-harmonic synchrony with the partners' speed. However, different pairs of monkeys synchronized differently and reached different speeds, and the monkeys synchronized their movements the most when they could both see and hear their partner.

The researchers note that this behavior cannot have been learnt by the monkeys during the experiment, as previous research has shown that it is extremely difficult for monkeys to learn intentional synchronization.

They add: "The reasons why the monkeys showed behavioral synchronization are not clear. It may be a vital aspect of other socially adaptive behavior, important for survival in the wild."

Lakes Oil Continues Search for Shale Oil with Gippsland Basin Corehole

Australia-listed Lakes Oil and Armour Energy disclosed Wednesday that they are drilling ahead with their Yallourn Power-1 well onshore the Gippsland Basin.

Yallourn Power-1, sited around one mile to the north of the township of Morwell in the Latrobe Valley in PEP 166, is being drilled to further the extent of the carbonaceous source rock sequence expected to exist across much of the prolific Gippsland Basin, Lakes Oil noted in its disclosure.

The well, which was spudded on Dec. 19, has a planned depth of 3,937 feet (1,200 meters) and is expected to take 40 days to drill. It is currently at a depth of 545 feet (166 meters).

The company's Chairman, Robert J. Annells, confirmed with Rigzone on Wednesday that Yallourn Power-1 is targeting for shale oil in the Gippsland Basin. Annells also revealed that Lakes Oil contract rig is a mineral rig, as coring works to the well's basement is required for this project.?

Lakes Oil secured the well during the holiday period in December last year. The company resumed drilling operations on Jan.7.

Lakes Oil has a 75 percent interest in the well, while Armour Energy holds the remaining 25 percent stake.

Roughly two-thirds of the Gippsland Basin is in the mainly shallow waters of the Bass Strait, with the remainder extending onshore in southeast Victoria. Australia's remaining oil resources, estimated at 1,431 million barrels, are located mostly in the Carnarvon and Gippsland basins.

Rating increase for Golden Globes awards this year

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Nielsen Co. says Sunday's Golden Globes awards ceremony got a nice ratings bump over last year.

With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler handling host duties, the NBC telecast was seen by 19.7 million viewers. That's an audience growth of 2.8 million viewers (or 17 percent) over last year's show, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais.

It was the top-rated Globes in six years, according to national figures released Monday.

For the fourth year, the Globes were televised live to all time zones, and some western markets also carried an encore telecast following the live coverage, which began at 5 p.m. Pacific time.

NBC said the telecast is currently the season's most-watched awards program, topping the CMA Awards, Emmy Awards, American Music Awards and People's Choice Awards.

The Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 10. The Academy Awards are Feb. 24.

Hadassah wires $10 million to hospital in Israel to help cover deficit

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Hadassah transferred $10 million to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem to help cover its subsidiary's $50 million deficit.

The New York Jewish Week reported Monday that the Zionist women's group took the unusual measure after learning of the deficit run up by the hospital, which was founded nearly 80 years ago.

Meanwhile, the medical center's director general, Ehud Kokia, has submitted his resignation. The medical center's board chair, Esti Dominissin, will fill the position until a replacement is found.

Hadassah National Director Marcie Natan said the organization would hire the services of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy firm, to help reduce the hospital's debts.

"The firm will analyze finances, accounting policies, administration and cost centers and will explore strategies for reducing expenses and increasing revenue," Natan said in a news release. "Based on its review, it will make recommendations on how our medical center can maintain its record of excellence while achieving greater efficiency."
