(AP) ? A tropical storm threatening Hawaii with wind and rain will weaken into a tropical depression within 24 hours, National Weather Service officials said Monday.

Acting Director Tom Evans of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Flossie had consistently weakened through the morning thanks to winds that broke the layers of the storm apart.

Forecasters say the storm will now bring rain of up to 6 inches on parts of the Big Island and up to 2 inches on other islands.

Evans says the storm's 40 mph winds will continue to weaken.

Tropical storm warnings are still in effect for all of Hawaii's islands. Evans says the warnings will remain in effect until Flossie is classified as a depression rather than a storm.

Forecasters still warned residents and tourists to brace for possible flooding, wind gusts and big waves along with mudslides.

Local television stations statewide extended morning news, pre-empting syndicated daytime shows to cover the storm's approach. With the storm still miles away, footage shown live showed minimal effects on the Big Island and Maui beyond some drizzles and big waves.

But state and local officials repeatedly warned residents and tourists to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

"Please stay home and in a secured, sheltered area," Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi said.

The center of the storm was about 90 miles northeast of Hilo on the Big Island on Monday morning. It had sustained winds of about 40 mph but was breaking apart as it approached the islands, creating separate fronts of wind and rain expected to pelt the archipelago.

The National Weather Service on Sunday issued a tropical storm warning for Oahu, Hawaii's most populous island with the city of Honolulu, to go along with previous warnings for the Big Island, Maui, Molokai and Lanai. It later issued a warning for Kauai and Niihau, saying a small change in Flossie's track could result in higher winds.

The warnings mean the storm represents a threat to life and property.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed an emergency proclamation in anticipation of the storm, allowing the state to use its disaster fund to pay for staff overtime, supplies and other resources. The proclamation also allows the state to call Hawaii National Guard members to duty, if necessary.

"I woke up to blue skies. It was just a beautiful day out," Ian Shortridge, 22, of Kealakekua, on the west side of the Big Island, said Monday. "It hasn't rained all morning. We are waiting for the rain."

Despite the lack of action, people were busy preparing on Sunday, Shortridge said. He was having lunch at a McDonald's restaurant, when he started to hear drilling and saw that employees were boarding up the windows. Store shelves were running low of essentials like bottled water and toilet paper, he said.

Officials warned people to cancel beach trips, finish necessary storm preparations and evacuate if asked by local officials.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed three ports ? two on the Big Island where the storm was expected first and a third port on Maui. College campuses and courts were also to be closed Monday on the Big Island. The Red Cross was gathering volunteers to staff 24 shelters statewide. There were five people at the Big Island's nine shelters on Monday morning, said Darryl Oliveira, Hawaii County Civil Defense director.

Mike McCartney, chief executive of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, said some airlines have begun to adjust flights and visitors should double-check plans. Airports statewide were open Monday but many flights were being canceled.

Trails and campgrounds were closed on the Big Island, where state officials warned people to avoid forest areas until Flossie clears.

Jobs Trailer: Ashton Kutcher Lashes Out, Smashes Phone--Watch Now

Steve Jobs didn't think imitation was the sincerest form of flattery?well, at least the biopic version of Steve Jobs didn't think so.

In the new Jobs 15-second trailer posted to Instagram Wednesday, Ashton Kutcher plays the Apple mastermind at the beginning of his career, completely losing his cool after "a blatant rip-off" of the computer he designed is put before him.

Enraged, he paces back and forth in his office, yelling loudly into a landline phone (iPhones weren't around yet!)?presumably at the copycat on the other end. "I will make it my life's mission to see to it that you never make another dollar that I don't first take 90 cents," he shouts furiously.

VIDEO: Watch the full Jobs trailer

Kutcher's onscreen portrayal of the late entrepreneur doesn't exactly portray him in the most flattering light, but the actor has the utmost respect for the man he described as "the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation."

On Tuesday's The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Kutcher regretfully said he missed out on an opportunity to meet Jobs "about six months before he passed." When news broke that the creative visionary died on Oct. 5, 2011, Kutcher had a very "emotional reaction."

PHOTO: Ashton Kutcher tweets a mashup pic of himself and Steve Jobs

"I realized that all the relationships I have in my life are held together by glue that he laid down," he said. "I'd taken [Jobs] for granted, and taken for granted the contribution that he gave to society."

"So when I got the [Jobs] script," he said, "I wanted to make sure that his legacy was told from someone who admired him."

The Voxel Agents launch Toy Mania on Facebook

toy-mania-650

Puzzle Retreat developer The Voxel Agents has announced the launch of its newest game, taking the developer back to Facebook with Toy Mania. In line with the company?s other puzzle games, Toy Mania is a fast-paced arcade game that asks players to create the largest toys possible in a limited amount of time.

Toy Mania looks like a match-three puzzle game, but functions more as a drag and drop experience. Players can click and drag whole columns or rows on the board to make matching shapes line up, creating toys. The more matching tiles touch, the larger the toy becomes and they more points it?s ultimately worth. Players must manually collect these toys when they?re satisfied with the size.

Weekly leaderboards track players? scores against others, and the game is available to play as many times as players wish to try and increase their high score.

?I was inspired by the Rubik?s Cube. I wanted to whittle it down and hone in on what is really fun about it ? the challenge of spatial arrangement,? said Creative Director Simon Jolsin, via a company release. ?In Toy Mania there?s a lot of depth in how you move the pieces around on the board and we?ve really brought a whole new experience to the color-matching genre.?

Toy Mania has been initially released in a early beta version in order to help mold the game with player feedback in mind.

?We prefer to make games with our players rather than in isolation,? added Joslin. ?This process of releasing games earlier in Beta form is a new approach for us but it fits perfectly with our methods of fast prototyping and exploration of new forms of gameplay.?

Toy Mania is now available to play for free on Facebook. You can track its progress on AppData, our tracking tool for social and mobile games and developers.

Trappist Monks Business Secrets Book Teaches Unconventional Path To Success

(RNS) Driving through the Spanish moss-draped gates of the Mepkin Abbey Trappist monastery in Moncks Corner, S.C., businessman August Turak felt as if he had just lost a whole lot of weight.

Not physical weight, but the weight of emotional and spiritual burdens.

After a corporate career with companies like MTV, Turak sold two successful software companies for $150 million, but shattering his ankle in a skydiving accident ?brought me face to face with my own mortality.?

?I was one of those people who was very successful but felt empty inside,? said Turak, who became a lecturer at Duke University.

One of his students suggested he might find a way to fill that void at Mepkin.

Something in him changed during that first visit 17 years ago, and he?s returned three or four times a year from his home in Raleigh, N.C., wearing a gray smock garment and working alongside the monks.

With each visit he became more fascinated with how the elderly monks conduct their businesses. This month, Turak released his book, ?Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks: One CEO?s Quest for Meaning and Authenticity.?

Some answers have been edited for length and clarity.

Q: What questions were you asking yourself as you watched the monks work?

A: I was thinking how do a couple of guys at the average age of 70 years old, who only work four hours a day and do so in silence, how do they manage to run 3,200 acres of land, a gift shop, library, conference center, an egg business, a timber business, a fertilizer business and a oyster mushroom business?

When people are passionately committed, they can do miraculous things. So I noticed that these guys are passionately committed to the high, overarching mission of selflessness, of something bigger than themselves.

Q: So can you share a few of the key secrets you learned?

A: Selflessness. When people feel like they?re on a mission from God, they accomplish incredible things and with a sense of satisfaction. We may think we want selfishness, but we?re happiest not when indulging but when we?re being selfless.

The real secret to the monks? success was they were not in business at all. Great leaders are like that. The less I cared about making money, the more I make. Once people realize or sense that you?re not in it for yourself, they begin to trust and turn to you, and you have the power to achieve your goals and your mission. The amount of trust you gain is directly proportionate to how selfless you are in business.

Q: You say the way the monks run things could apply to any business in America. Can you name a few that operate similarly?

A: I have a problem with Nike?s mission, ?Just do it.? There?s not a moral component to Nike?s mission. For me, a mission has got to be worthwhile. It?s got to be higher. What people today are looking for is a noble mission.

It?s not a trade-off that the more good you do, the less money you?ll make. What Warren Buffett proves, what the monks prove, is the more ethically you behave, the more you grow and better you do.

Q: Everyone talks about finding work/life balance. How do the monks do it?

A: The monks don?t worry about balancing work and prayer; they are equally important. Work is a form of prayer, and prayer is a form of work. I found that one of the best praying times I had was while I was at work, standing at an assembly life.

Your ordinary life is your spiritual life. Every single challenge can be an opportunity for transformation if you look at it in the right way. You serve God through work and serve God through prayer.

Q: How does this philosophy of integrating prayer with work compare with prosperity gospel?

A: To me, this is the thing I?m always fighting against. The problem is that most people think that if I help this old lady up the street, I better buy a lottery ticket because I?m sure to win. But that philosophy short-circuits grace. I?m a grace guy, not a luck guy.

You have to give because that?s where you get your true joy and pleasure. As long as you?re trying to use God like a lucky rabbit?s foot to make you better in business, you?re not going to make it.

Q: Did all of these trips make you want to become a monk?

A: I do not have a vocation to become a Trappist. I am not a contemplative. I like to teach and talk, and if I would stick with the Catholics, I would be a Jesuit. Teaching and working with other people is far more my calling than being a contemplative.

It?s becoming more and more difficult to find someone who wants to dedicate themselves to religious principles. They seem to get a decent amount of guys, but they stay a year or two and then leave. In our society, that kind of life is just too difficult for many people. They?re like a beacon shining on the hill for the rest of us.

iwatchMany?Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) watchers are familiar with the incredibly strong alloy known as Liquidmetal. Apple acquired the rights to this unique material in a 2010 deal with Liquidmetal Technologies (LQMT.PK). Since then, the Cupertino-based company has not done much with this material except make a SIM card eject tool for the iPhone. One reason for the limited use of this material is the difficulty in producing it in large amounts.

A recently granted patent indicates that Apple has overcome this production limitation. This has led some commentators to speculate that the next-generation iPhone will be made of this material that has ?twice the strength of titanium.?

However, Anthony Wing Kosner at Forbes makes a convincing argument that the first product to be made with Liquidmetal will likely be the long-rumored iWatch. He notes that recent rumors reported by 9to5Mac and the Financial Times indicate that the wearable tech project at Apple has taken on a sudden urgency.

A blow to LI's middle class: local jobs recovery led by low-wage sectors

Photo credit: Bloomberg News | A stack of bass wood lumber is moved with a forklift.

Lower-paying jobs have been growing faster on Long Island than better wage occupations during the economic recovery, while manufacturing and public-sector work -- long a mainstay for the middle class -- are losing ground.

Though the post-recession unemployment rate on Long Island dropped to 6.1 percent in May from a recession-caused peak of 8.3 percent in February 2010, "the strongest growth has been in industries paying below-average wages," said New York State Labor Department analyst Jim Brown.

The May figures showed the trend continuing, with 6,300 fewer jobs in manufacturing and government, such as public school teaching, compared with a year earlier. But there were boosts in leisure and hospitality (7,000), and retail (6,200.)

For many Long Islanders, the trend is reflected in having to work multiple jobs or to struggle to meet expenses on part-time work in a region where -- according to the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington think tank -- families of four need an income above $90,000 to live in modest financial security.

Don Krauss, 53, of Lindenhurst, lost his full-time job as a mechanic in a diesel engine repair shop in 2011.

Since then, he's cobbled together two part-time jobs, one at Home Depot in Farmingdale and another as an usher at a funeral home. That worked as long as his wife did, but she recently lost a job too. Now, he said, they will have trouble paying their $3,000-a-month mortgage. They plan to move upstate. "I'm looking to move out of here as soon as I can," he said.

Employment statistics show why it's become harder for many Long Islanders to keep up:

On the Island, the greatest job loss between 2000 and 2012 was in manufacturing: 30,000 jobs gone that tended to pay above-average wages, said Michael Crowell, senior economist at the state Labor Department's Long Island office. Leisure and hospitality in Nassau and Suffolk counties, which includes hotels and restaurants, "has grown by close to 22,000 jobs, and that is the lowest-paying sector on Long Island."

Health care and professional and technical services showed strength, with their mix of higher-paying and low-wage jobs. Construction, after lagging for some years, gained the last two years.

Nationally, the biggest surge in jobs in recent months has come in part-time employment: national statistics showed an increase of 432,000 part-time jobs between May and June, and 240,000 fewer full-time jobs.

Of the record 28 million people around the United States now holding part-time jobs, 8.2 million do so because their hours were cut or they couldn't find full-time work, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wages failed to keep up with inflation in six of the 10 lowest-paying occupational categories on Long Island between 2000 and 2012, according to state Labor Department statistics.

For many in the lower-wage categories, the 40-hour workweek is a relic.

Up to 70 hours a week

Alex Arias, 43, of North Babylon, said he puts in up to 70 hours per week at three jobs with no benefits beyond three paid personal days. He works up to 40 hours a week during the school year as a middle-school substitute teacher, but is a per-diem employee, not a staff member.

Arias spends 20 hours a week as a sales associate at Staples and another 10 hours as an assistant kitchen manager at a Sonic fast-food restaurant.

The plight of workers unable to land a traditional full-time job with benefits is discouraging, he said. "You work so hard, and you kind of feel you're not getting a lot in return," he said. "You have to work 40 hours to get benefits, and they'll give you 38."

Meanwhile, he said, he has student loans coming due in December. He said he pays the mortgage and taxes on the house he shares with his ailing mother. He went back to school to obtain a master's in special education but found few job openings.

Marvelyn Stanley, 47, of Hempstead, has two full-time jobs for a combined $67,000 while her husband works full time as a truck tire mechanic. He hasn't gotten a raise in five years, she said.

She works from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as an aide in a nursing home, and from 3:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. giving direct care to disabled group home residents. Each job is five days a week.

"I leave at 6:30 in the morning and come home at 11:30 p.m. or 12 a.m. the next day," she said. "We pay $10,000 a year in taxes, and have a daughter in college. I do need two full-time jobs, God help us."

Some working people find they can't make it without help.

A home health aide went to the Selden Centereach Youth Association's Helping Hand food pantry a few weeks ago to sign up for a disabled client -- and herself.

Pantry workers said they see a lot of people with jobs coming there for free food -- bread and cereal and, if they're lucky, a frozen chicken.

"The majority of our clients are working poor," said Joy Meyer-Buckley, manager at the pantry. "Some of the people are working full time. Some are working two part-time jobs."

Karen Boorshtein, president of the Family Service League, a social service agency with 15 Long Island locations, said there's been a change in the typical client seeking assistance or counseling.

"What we've seen are very middle-class families where one or both husband and wife lost a job, or had to take a lower-paying job and they find that they are having difficulties paying their bills. . . . Having to work two and three jobs to make enough money, it's not the exception anymore the way it used to be."

One job just not enough

A 38-year-old father of two from West Babylon who asked to be identified only by his first name, Frank, said he works a 72- to 80-hour week, seven days a week. He has a full-time job at the counter of a plumbing supply business and works part-time at Home Depot.

"I'm done if I work 40 hours. I can't live off that," he said. "I barely make it working seven days. I went three or four months without a day off."

Frank said his wife is now looking for work around their children's school schedule: "There's only a handful of jobs she can go for, and every mom is going for them," he added.

Customers interviewed in the parking lot of a big-box store in East Meadow said they have jobs that don't pay enough to live on comfortably.

Most didn't want their full names used, like Frank, 28, who said he worked 60 to 70 hours a week as a restaurant manager and hadn't had a raise in four or five years. He can't afford the health insurance plan offered by his employer and lives with his wife and two young children in a one-bedroom apartment in Levittown for $1,500 a month plus utilities.

His children qualify for Medicaid and food stamps. "Otherwise, my income wouldn't be enough for us," he said.

Between 1979 and 2011, adults 25 and up went from being nearly half of the low-wage workforce to more than 60 percent, according to a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. A third have at least a few years of college. College grads are 9.9 percent of the low-wage workforce.

A long-term trend

The growth in part-time work has been a long-term trend, rising from about 13 percent of the workforce in 1968 to 19.7 percent in 2013, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Median wages have been stagnating since the 1970s, the data show.

A Walmart spokesman, Kory Lunberg, said that more than 50 percent of the chain's hourly wage workers were full time. He said only some part-timers work a flexible schedule and are told up-front that their hours would fluctuate "depending on the needs of the store."

Newer workers must pass a threshold of 24 to 30 hours a week on average to become eligible for health and other benefits. "We're one of the few retailers to offer benefits to part-time workers," he said.

Part-timers typically get fewer benefits, like health insurance and sick days, than full-timers, or none at all. Critics of industries that rely on low-paid employees say that many are forced to turn to government services such as food stamps and energy and housing assistance.

"People are realizing the taxpayer is going to pay for this," said Patrick Purcell, a spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 in Westbury, which represents unionized supermarkets and tried, unsuccessfully, to unionize the Target in Valley Stream last year.

Brown, the state Labor Department analyst, sounded an optimistic note. The future could look very different, he said, depending on the course of future economic development here.

In past recessions and recoveries, he said, "nobody was standing around in 2003 or in 1993 saying the economy was about to get really strong" -- but both times, he said, it came back well enough to generate good jobs.

"I'm reluctant to look at the current picture and say that it will go on like this forever," he said.
