The HarperCollins offices are to move from Hammersmith to London Bridge.
The publisher will be based in The Place, nicknamed "The Baby Shard", with parent company News Corp agreeing a 30-year lease for the building. Timing for the move is yet to be finalised, but is not planned to be earlier than the second half of 2014.
Other News Corp companies will also move into the 428,000 sq ft building, including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Sun, Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal. The new building, designed by architect Renzo Piano alongside The Shard, features a roof terrace and an in-house theatre.
In a message to staff sent out today (12th July), HarperCollins m.d. Simon Johnson said: "It is a fantastic structure at the heart of what is set to be one of London's fastest-growing creative hubs? This is a real milestone in the nearly 200-year history of HarperCollins. Moving into a purpose built, state-of-the-art, utterly iconic building, together with the global media brands of News UK and Dow Jones, will allow us to take our business to the next level."
Johnson said: "London Bridge station is gradually being transformed, there is a huge and eclectic mix of bars and restaurants and a brilliant array of shops. International cultural icons Tate Modern and The Globe have acted as a beacon for creative people, resulting in a surge of small, cutting edge businesses arriving in the area. Not very like Hammersmith, you might say! It means that both our internal and external environment will be a source of creative inspiration which I believe will greatly assist our business."
It is planned that News UK, comprising of the UK newspapers, will move in the summer of 2014, with the other business following in the next six to 12 months. HarperCollins, which is currently in offices on Fulham Palace Road, will have dedicated floors, as well as sharing spaces such as the roof terrace and theatre, which Johnson said would be "a treat for hosting book launches" and "ideal for company meetings, presentations, author Q&As".
In May, property magazines Estates Gazette and Property Week reported that News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch was in talks to secure the building, relocating his newspaper businesses from Wapping where they have been for 27 years.
Other businesses which have lately relocated to London Bridge include PR firm Four Colman Getty and The Bookseller.
